The Austerity State
Author: Stephen McBride
Publisher: University of Toronto Press
ISBN: 1487521952
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 348
Book Description
"This volume focuses on the state's role in managing the fall-out from the global economic and financial crisis since 2008. For a brief moment, roughly from 2008-2010, governments and central banks appeared to borrow from Keynes to save the global economy. The contributors, however, take the view that to see those stimulus measures as "Keynesian" is a misinterpretation. Rather, neoliberalism demonstrated considerable resiliency despite its responsibility for the deep and prolonged crisis. The "austerian" analysis of the crisis is--historical, ignores its deeper roots, and rests upon a triumph of discourse involving blame-shifting from the under-regulated private sector to public or sovereign debt--for which the public authorities are responsible."--

Academic Libraries in Urban and Metropolitan Areas
Author: Gerard B. McCabe
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 0313079366
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 288
Book Description
Solutions to the unique problems of academic libraries in urban and metropolitan areas are provided in this professional handbook. Issues faced by the administrators of these libraries can differ markedly from those encountered by their counterparts in residential college towns, with service demands emanating from both the surrounding community and their own academic community. Written by experienced urban university librarians, each chapter addresses issues unique to the in-city academic library. Reaching out to their communities to establish links with business, industry, and other libraries, the administrators of the urban/metropolitan libraries require a great degree of diplomacy and management skills. Service demands arising from urban high schools place additional pressures on limited resources. This handbook shows how the use of new technologies can assist the urban academic librarian in fashioning services for a nonresident faculty, as well as a usually older student body, comprised of many international and part-time students. The characteristics of city living and their impact on information-seeking behavior are discussed. Other topics covered are resource sharing, setting fees, staff and collection security, environmental pollution and space requirements.

Author: Ruth A. Fraley
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000757722
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 295
Book Description
The library budget, a topic of primary importance to the reference librarian, is thoroughly examined in this book, first published in 1988. Experts offer insightful suggestions for reference librarians to understand and take responsibility for budget issues, directly and indirectly. They address the ability to explain the budget - which actually entails explaining the collection, the services, and the process in place for managing the fiscal resources - a necessary skill for any reference librarian faced with looming budget cuts. Providing quality services on a limited budget is also explored. The contributors provide helpful essays on convincing the parent agency to provide adequate support, setting goals and priorities, generating revenue, and more.

Academic Libraries
Author: Barbara B. Moran
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Academic libraries
Languages : en
Pages : 120
Book Description
Changes occurring in college libraries as a result of automation are described, along with financial issues in library management, personnel issues, and changing patterns of collection development and resource sharing. New developments include online public access catalogs, computer-generated bibliographies, online search systems, and computerized library networks that enable sharing of cataloging records. To promote the conversion to modern information services, library directors need managerial, leadership, and fund-raising skills. In addition to a growing number of academic librarians who have been given faculty status, the library school curriculum and the credentials needed by beginning librarians have changed in response to modern developments. As a result of the tremendous growth in the volume and costs of publications, campus libraries have been unable to maintain previous levels of collection development. Examples of resource sharing, which addresses this difficulty, are identified. Also considered are new formats in library collections (e.g., video discs), and the problem of preserving library materials. Recommendations concerning planning, financial support of libraries, and cooperative library ventures are included.
