Advanced Practice Nursing students do not have appropriate knowledge and attitudes to manage depression. There have been no previous studies that have looked specifically at the knowledge and attitudes of advanced practice nursing student's towards depression, prior to graduation. Current research focuses primarily on the knowledge and attitudes of licensed Nurse Practitioners and Physicians, and their comfort level with managing depression. The sample subjects are registered nurses enrolled in one of four Nurse Practitioner programs: 1). CSUSM Family Nurse Practitioner, 2) Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, 3). SDSU Adult/Gerontology Nurse Practitioner, and 4). SDSU Women's Health Nurse Practitioner. The survey tool is a modified Depression Attitude Questionnaire, which has been used in various other research articles to assess the knowledge and attitudes of health care providers towards managing depression. Additional questions were added to assess for comfort level of managing depression and demographic information. The questionnaire was distributed in person and electronically via Survey Monkey. Attitudes of APN students towards managing depression is positive, including feeling comfortable assessing for depression and discussing depression related information with other health care professionals. The study also showed significant correlation between APN student's increasing age and increased positive attitudes towards depression. The study questions pertaining to knowledge were not found to be statistically reliable and therefore were not included in the study findings.

The burden of depression across the globe is estimated to be a leading cause of disability. In the U.S., a considerable portion of mental healthcare is delivered in the primary care setting. Barriers to achieve best practices are often magnified during the transition for nurses entering advanced practice. Rosswurm and Larrabee's evidence based practice change model was utilized to develop a project aimed to improve novice APN's attitudes about depression screening and management for adult patients in the primary care setting. The project used a purposive sample of 100 novice APNs from across the nation utilizing a quasi-experimental, one group, pre-test/post-test design to measure attitudes, professional confidence and perspectives of novice providers caring for patients experiencing depression before and after an online educational offering. The Revised Depression Attitude Questionnaire (R-DAQ) was the validated instrument used in the study. Statistical significance was achieved across all three domains of the R-DAQ. Twenty-six of the 100 participants agreed to take the R-DAQ a third time in order to synthesize the content from the educational module in practice. Mean scores returned almost to pre-test levels in all domains (p> 0.05). The diagnosis and treatment of depression in a primary care setting demands an awareness of the significance of the problem, an understanding of the tools available for use in screening and a reasonable systematic approach to ensure that a patient-centered evidence-based treatment plan is followed. Future implications for practice will need to address educational efforts that promote sustainability in the practice setting.

Background: In the United States, depression is the most common cause of mental illness. Objective: This study examines what causes primary care nurse practitioners (NPs) to inquire about depression symptoms in their patients. Method: A cross-sectional qualitative study was conducted to explore the views of nurse practitioners on detecting and diagnosing depression in the primary care setting. Findings: Study findings show that: a) NPs suspect depression from Patient Health Questionnaires, and verbal or non-verbal cues, and b) Clinicians hesitate to bring up their suspicions with patients if they perceived to be unwilling to accept the diagnosis of depression. Conclusion: The factors that most influenced a nurse practitioner’s ability to inquire about verbal or nonverbal signs of depression were related to their work environment and/or personal biases. Further research should seek to develop strategies and educational programs that enable primary care providers to inquire on their patient’s emotional concerns.

"The qualitative research study examined health professions graduate students' attitudes toward depression. Peplau's theory that focuses on the interpersonal processes and relationships between nurses and patients provided the conceptual framework. This framework was extended to health professions graduate students to assess their attitudes toward depression. A convenience sample of 100 graduate students enrolled in Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), Master of Social Work (MSW), and Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) programs at Saginaw Valley State University were invited to participate in an online survey using the Revised Depression Attitude Questionnaire (R-DAQ). This instrument examined the participants (n=63) attitudes toward depression in three domains: professional confidence in providing care for patients with depression, therapeutic optimism about depression, and clinician's perspective on depression occurrence, recognition and management. Despite overall positive attitude toward depression, all participants had a lack of professional confidence in providing care for patients with mental disorders. The mean score of the MSN/DNP program was statistically significantly lower (19, ±4.2) than the mean score of MSOT program (23, ±4.3, p=0.01) and MSW program (24, ±4, p=. 000) in this domain. Additionally, in depression occurrence domain the MSOT program group (26.8, ±1.50) had statistically significantly higher mean score than the MSN/DNP program group (24.8, ±2.73, p=. 007) and the MSW program group (25.1, ±2.18, p= .042).
