Book Description
A lot of research on biomarkers for Alzheimer is being done in the last few decades. The aim of these studies is to find some method to ease the diagnosis of Alzheimers as early as possible. Such methods are a range of blood or CSF tests on one hand and several types of neuroimaging scans on the other. Many of the images coming both from laboratory and neuroimaging are very visual and illustrative. These images, accompanied by a short description, can perfectly explain the main results and usefulness of every biomarker. The objective of this book would be to summarize the most important studies made in this field. Few publications have systematically compiled results on this topic and only one as an atlas. Readers would be interested in this publication because it allows reviewing the current status of research by handily visualizing the results.

Early Diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease
Author: Leonard F. M. Scinto
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1592590055
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 366
Book Description
Drs. Leonard Scinto and Kirk Daffner provide a comprehensive survey of new diagnostic approaches to Alzheimer's disease. The authoritative contributors critically survey the most promising current research on early diagnostic markers for Alzheimer's disease, including the elucidation of changes in the brain revealed by structural and functional neuroimaging, as well as the characteristic patterns of cognitive decline that are documented by sensitive neuropsychological tests, various genetic markers, and biological assays. Early Diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease illuminates the complex issues surrounding the search for early markers of this increasingly widespread disease. It will establish a new standard reference guide for all those working with Alzheimer's patients.

Late Onset Schizophrenia
Author: Robert Howard
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN:
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 296
Book Description
Schizophrenia, which starts in middle age or late life, has been described as 'the darkest area of psychiatry.' It is certainly controversial, with much disagreement about cut-off ages, diagnostic criteria and nomenclature. The contributors to this unique and very important book represent views from Europe and North America as well as Australia, Japan, and Nepal; they come from backgrounds of clinical practice and research. The contributors and editors were motivated by common aims: to review current international knowledge about late onset schizophrenia, to debate issues of heterogenity, gender, brain maturation and aging, putative structural and functional cerebral substrates for psychosis, to reach consensus on diagnosis and terminology, and to future research directions. The resulting book is an unqualified success which as well as being invaluable in old age psychiatry, sheds light on all aspects of schizophrenia treatment and research.

Neurodegenerative Diseases
Author: Nagehan Ersoy Tunalı
Publisher: BoD – Books on Demand
ISBN: 1838801499
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 180
Book Description
Neurodegenerative diseases represent a very large group of heterogeneous disorders affecting specific subtypes of neurons in the brain. This book contributes insight both to the awareness of the brain and its neurodegenerative states. The chapters present current knowledge regarding genetics, molecular mechanisms, and new therapeutic strategies against neurodegenerative disorders. The book is intended to serve as a source to aid clinicians and researchers in the field, and also life science readers to increase their understanding and awareness of the clinical correlations, genetic aspects, neuropathological findings, and current therapeutic interventions in neurodegenerative diseases. I believe that this book will enlighten the curiosity for neurodegeneration and also encourage researchers to work on potentially effective molecular therapies for still mysterious neurodegenerative disorders.

Clinical Use of Biomarkers in Neurodegenerative Disorders
Author: Manuel Menéndez-González
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Neurology
Languages : en
Pages : 122
Book Description
The world has a rapidly ageing population. Neurodegenerative diseases (ND) are strongly linked with age, with older citizens more at risk. Therefore the prevalence of ND is increasing dramatically. The major problem with ND is its difficulty to be diagnosed early. The goal of biomarker characterization is to increase certainty that a person has or does not have underlying pathology. During last decades, many research projects where focused on research on biomarkers for ND and this research has blasted into hundreds of scientific articles. However, few studies assessed their use in real clinical practice conditions. This Frontiers Research Topic is focused in the use of biomarkers for neurodegenerative disorders in the clinical setting. Topics include the use of biomarkers in the differential diagnosis of ND, the use of biomarkers to assess the risk of conversion from preclinical conditions, the use of biomarkers to follow up of clinical conditions and studies comparing biomarkers. We challenge to publish studies not only for the more frequent and more studied ND (Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases), but also for other less known ND such as prion diseases, motor neurone diseases, Huntington's disease, spinocerebellar ataxia or spinal muscular atrophy among others. Biomarkers are very different in nature - from neuroimaging techniques to molecular parameters to be determined in the biochemical laboratory-. We welcome manuscripts reporting all kind of biomarkers since we wish to join and show together studies from different domains and thus give a perspective throughout the whole spectrum of research on biomarkers for ND.

Neuroanatomy and Pathology of Sporadic Alzheimer's Disease
Author: Heiko Braak
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319126792
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 168
Book Description
As indicated by its title, this monograph deals chiefly with morphologically recognizable deviations from the normal anatomical condition of the human CNS. The AD-associated pathology is illustrated from its beginnings (sometimes even in childhood) to its final form, which is reached late in life. The AD process commences much earlier than the clinically recognizable phase of the disorder, and its timeline includes an extended preclinical phase. The further the pendulum swings away from the symptomatic final stages towards the early pathology, the more obvious the lesions become, although from a standpoint of severity they are more unremarkable and thus frequently overlooked during routine neuropathological assessment. For this reason, the authors deal with the hallmark lesions in the early phases of the AD process in considerable detail
