"Artist book developed in collaboration between the artist Eli Sudbrack and designer and editor Maria Lago. The book is the avaf manifesto and an homage to brazilian concrete poetry, playing with words as images and representing the meanings through visual games. The artist works under a pseudonym, assume vivid astro focus (avaf). Since many years he has been playing with the avaf initials and creating new avafs (which are used as email signatures, titles of exhibitions and works). Friends and other people that interact with the artist often send him new avafs creating a “word bank”. For the typographical representation of these phrases, the choice was AVAF's font, inspired by Jenny Holzer’s “Truisms” that were displayed on large public electronic signs in the 1980’s, specially her insertions on Times Square LED signs. Assume vivid astro focus is both the pseudonym of a New York based Brazilian artist and the title given to the artist's wide-ranging aesthetic project. This new work, commissioned for Tate Liverpool to complement the exhibition 'Summer of Love: Art of the Psychedelic Era', is an all-encompassing environment combining exuberant wallpaper designed by the artist and several video projections. The centrepiece is a video montage, an ongoing project of potentially unlimited duration since new footage is added to it for each venue. This piece encapsulates the inclusive nature of avaf's work and the ideology behind it, which seeks to involve rather than exclude whilst undermining the idea of individual authorship. The video, titled Butch Queen Realness with a Twist in Pastel Colours Video Show, brings together footage drawn from a variety of sources including music videos and television shows, film of club nights, other artists' videos, dance performances, abstract designs and animations. Often the material is obscure and part of avaf's working process is the quest to track it down, a practice exposed in his 'To Do' lists which are released with each new installation. In avaf's work the sources are blended together, fused, overlapping, contaminated and contaminating. I'm with Her is the first book to offer a cohesive presentation of American artist Rochelle Feinstein's rich career to date. Bringing together several important bodies of work, such as The Estate of Rochelle F, The Abramovic Method and The Wonderfuls, this compendium showcases an evolving, expansive and highly self-reflexive painting practice. Possessing an extensive painting lexicon, Feinstein employs an array of media from silkscreen, to photography and assemblage, to abstract, expressive painting. These combined material processes are applied to an appropriative practice that cross-references the historical with the vernacular, the mythologies of art history and popular culture. Sourcing and reconstituting found visual material, Feinstein includes text, personal photography and even self-cannibalises past work. I'm with Her showcases a deliberately a-stylistic yet deeply personal body of work, vacillating between earnestness and irreverence. Feinstein exhibits widely in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums across the United States and Europe, and her work is included in numerous public and private collections. Recent awards include the Guggenheim Fellowship and a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Fellowship. Having received a BFA from Pratt Institute in 1975 and an MFA from the University of Minnesota in 1978, she was appointed to the Yale faculty in 1994 and is currently professor of painting/printmaking. Rochelle Feinstein's forthcoming retrospective will open at Centre d'Art Contemporarin, Geneva in January 2016, and travel to Lenbachhaus, Munich and Kestner-Gesellschaft, Hannover.
