Une methode d'analyse optimale a ete developpee afin d'assimiler des donnees de hauteur dynamique (topographie de la surface de l'ocean) dans un modele de l'ocean atlantique tropical a la physique simplifiee (lineaire a trois modes verticaux). La methode repose sur une minimisation globale des ecarts quadratiques entre les observations et leurs equivalents correspondants du modele, en accord avec les echelles caracteristiques des champs analyses. Des experiences effectuees avec les donnees simulees, issues d'un modele aux equations primitives, ont montre que les assimilations sont partout efficaces excepte dans les regions est-equatoriales. Ces regions sont fortement perturbees par des ondes de kelvin equatoriales generees par les assimilations quand les differences entre les observations et les resultats du modele sont importantes. Si les donnees de hauteur dynamique sont remplacees par leurs anomalies, les champs sont modifies de facon insignifiante dans la bande equatoriale, le rapport signal/bruit y etant relativement faible. Les structures des champs sont cependant bien corrigees hors de cette region. Une experience d'assimilations de donnees reelles (champs d'anomalies de hauteur dynamique obtenus a partir des mesures altimetriques du satellite geosat) a egalement ete effectuee, conduisant a des conclusions similaires

Nous allons disposer, grace aux lancements des nouveaux satellites d'observation de la terre comme ers1 et topex/poseidon, d'un nombre important d'observations qui doit permettre de suivre l'evolution des oceans. Pour utiliser au mieux ces donnees, il est indispensable de les coupler a des modeles dynamiques a l'aide de techniques d'assimilation performantes. Ce travail a considere a developper, sur l'atlantique tropical, un filtre de kalman pour l'assimilation des donnees altimetriques geosat dans un modele dynamique lineaire. Ainsi, pour la premiere fois, un filtre de kalman complet, faisant intervenir un vecteur d'etat de dimension importante (de l'ordre de 5000) est mis en place de facon a permettre son utilisation de maniere quasi operationnelle (1 mois d'assimilation=7 heures de cray2). Le modele utilise, le traitement des donnees altimetriques ainsi que le choix du filtre sont explicites dans la premiere partie de la these. Dans la deuxieme partie, sont presentes une validation de l'algorithme et differents tests de sensibilite et de comportement du filtre a l'assimilation trace par trace (correspondant au passage du satellite au-dessus du bassin) d'observations simulees. Enfin, l'assimilation des donnees altimetriques geosat est effectuee pendant deux saisons (ete, hiver), fournissant un premier resultat oceanographique qui est compare a ceux obtenus soit par analyse objective des donnees altimetriques seules, soit par differents modeles
