Book Description
In 1992, a set of biophysical criteria for shellfish culture in British Columbia was developed, representing a first step in standardizing techniques for shellfish culture capability evaluations. These techniques and protocols have been applied within this report as a case application to demonstrate how they can be used for inlets and passages to classify their shellfish culture potential. The resulting information can be used for land use planning exercises, land claim negotiations, or where to focus site-specific feasibility studies. The report contains an appraisal of shellfish culture capability for Clayoquot Sound based on information acquired through an extensive oceanographic survey conducted in summer 1992 and winter 1993. Shellfish culture capability appraisals for potential bottom culture and deepwater (suspended) culture areas of the sound are provided, and a summary of the regional appraisal by major waterway is given, discussing areas classified as good, medium, poor, and not advisable.

Part 4 discusses site selection for shellfish aquaculture and part 5 provides a synopsis of the method used in evaluating site capability & suitability of areas of shellfish culture interest for ten First Nation territories on the central & north coast. Part 6 reviews issues concerning food safety and shellfish aquaculture, including shellfish toxicity. Book Description
Ocean harvests have plateaued worldwide and many important commercial stocks have been depleted. This has caused great concern among scientists, fishery managers, the fishing community, and the public. This book evaluates the major models used for estimating the size and structure of marine fish populations (stock assessments) and changes in populations over time. It demonstrates how problems that may occur in fisheries dataâ€"for example underreporting or changes in the likelihood that fish can be caught with a given type of gearâ€"can seriously degrade the quality of stock assessments. The volume makes recommendations for means to improve stock assessments and their use in fishery management.
