Book Description
The Defence of the Seven Sacraments (in Latin, Assertio Septem Sacramentorum) is a theological treatise from 1521, written by King Henry VIII of England. Henry started to write it in 1519 while he was reading Martin Luther's attack on indulgences. By June of that year, he had shown it to Thomas Wolsey, but it remained private until three years later, when the earlier manuscript became the first two chapters of the Assertio, the rest consisting of new material relating to Luther's De Captivitate Babylonica. It is believed that Thomas More was involved in the composition of the piece. Author J. J. Scarisbrick describes the work as "one of the most successful pieces of Catholic polemics produced by the first generation of anti-Protestant writers." It went through some twenty editions in the sixteenth century and, as early as 1522, had appeared in two different German translations. It was dedicated to Pope Leo X, who rewarded Henry with the title Fidei Defensor (Defender of the Faith) in October 1521 (a title revoked following the king's break with the Catholic Church in the 1530s, but re-awarded to his heir by the English Parliament).

Book Description
For writing this book, King Henry VIII was named Defender of the Faith by Pope Leo X. When out of lust, Henry fell into schism from the Catholic Church he unjustly retained the title of defender of a faith he had now abandoned. In this book he defends the seven sacraments, now diluted by the Anglican Church he had started. He also defends the primacy of the Roman Pontiff, he who was soon to refuse to obey in a matter of morals in regard to the Sacrament of Matrimony.

St. Alphonsus writes: “a single bad book will be sufficient to cause the destruction of a monastery.” Pope Pius XII wrote in 1947 at the beatification of Blessed Maria Goretti: “There rises to Our lips the cry of the Saviour: 'Woe to the world because of scandals!' (Matthew 18:7). Woe to those who consciously and deliberately spread corruption-in novels, newspapers, magazines, theaters, films, in a world of immodesty!” We at St. Pius X Press are calling for a crusade of good books. Book Description
Excerpt from Assertio Septem Sacramentorum: Or the Defence of the Seven Sacraments The "Assertio Septem Sacramentorum," or "D fence of the Seven Sacraments," by Henry VIII., King of England, and "Defender of the Faith," here reedited by Rev. Louis O'Donovan, is a rare, royal, Catholic book. It is rare, inasmuch as it has probably been printed but twice in nearly 200 years, and so no wonder that lately a copy of the work was listed for sale at $25.00. It is a royal book, by reason of its kingly author, whose claim is shown to be, if not certain, at least very probable. It is Catholic, because no Catholic could write a more orthodox treatise on the subjects here explained by King Henry VIII. Yet he expounds such crucial dogmas as the primacy of the Bishop of Rome, indulgences, the mystery of the Real Presence and the Mass, the Sacrament of Confession, divorce, etc. And all this he has unfolded in as Catholic a manner as St. Thomas, or St. Francis de Sales, or St. Alphonsus Liguori could have done. But besides the matter of the treatise, the period also when it was composed - a most interesting, even if saddening, epoch in the history of the Church - makes the work most valuable. For just at that date - 1521 - the cauldron of the so-called Reformation was boiling furiously in Germany. But in England, Henry boasted that its horrors had not yet begun, and, more over, he posed as the champion of the Church, to see that Luther's novelties should not appear there.
