Um dos objetivos que presidiram a criação das Unidades de Conservação Ambiental - UCs foi assegurar a proteção da natureza face às ameaças de degradação promovidas por atividades econômicas e sociais. Também buscava-se permitir a investigação científica de áreas não afetadas por atividades humanas. Nos locais já habitados, este fato trouxe alterações para vida de seus moradores, bem como dificuldades à manutenção de suas características naturais. Além disso, na maioria dos casos, a criação dessas áreas impediu o desenvolvimento econômico e social das regiões atingidas. Na tentativa de minimizar esses problemas a proposta de desenvolvimento sustentável, internacionalmente discutida, trouxe novas perspectivas e sugeriu um enfoque diferente para a gestão das áreas protegidas em todo o mundo. Nessa proposta busca-se conciliar a conservação da natureza e ao mesmo tempo promover o desenvolvimento regional. O ordenamento territorial constitui um dos elementos básicos neste novo enfoque e traz em sua formulação medidas alternativas para promover este tipo de desenvolvimento. Exemplos disso no Brasil podem ser dados com os vários programas ambientais implementados na esfera federal, dentre eles o Programa Nacional de Meio Ambiente - PNMA, e estadual, como é o caso do Gerenciamento Costeiro do Estado de São Paulo. This book discusses the Lagoa Santa Karst, which has been internationally known since the pioneering studies of the Danish naturalist Peter Lund in the early 1800s. It covers the speleogenesis, geology, vegetation, fauna, hydrogeology, geomorphology, and anthropogenic use of the Lagoa Santa Karst and is the first English-language book on this major karst area. The area, which has been at the heart of the debate on the origin and age of human colonization in the Americas, is characterized by a classical and scenic karst landscape with limestone cliffs, karst lakes and karst plains, in addition to numerous solution dolines. More than 1,000 caves have been documented in the area, many with significant archeological and paleontological value. Despite its great importance, the Lagoa Santa Karst faces severe environmental threats due to limestone mining and the expansion of the metropolis of Belo Horizonte and its surrounding towns.
