Boécio foi uma figura pública eminente sob o imperador gótico Teodorico, o Grande, e um estudioso excepcional da cultura grega. Quando envolvido em uma conspiração e preso, foi aos filósofos gregos que Boécio recorreu. “A Consolação da Filosofia” foi escrita durante um período de um ano de prisão e tortura, enquanto Boécio aguardava sua execução pelo suposto crime de traição. Esta sua experiência inspirou o texto, que reflete sobre como o mal pode existir em um mundo governado por Deus, e como a felicidade pode ser alcançada mesmo com uma fortuna inconstante. Sua explicação sobre a natureza da Fortuna e da felicidade, o bem e o mal, o destino e o livre arbítrio, restaura a saúde do prisioneiro e o leva à iluminação. “A Consolação da Filosofia” foi extremamente popular em toda a Europa medieval. Suas ideias influenciaram, entre outros, Tomás de Aquino, Chaucer e Dante Alighieri. “Mas quem pode estabelecer leis aos amantes? O amor só conhece uma lei!”

Boethius (c.480–c.525/6), though a Christian, worked in the tradition of the Neoplatonic schools, with their strong interest in Aristotelian logic and Platonic metaphysics. He is best known for his Consolation of Philosophy, which he wrote in prison awaiting execution. His works also include a long series of logical translations, commentaries and monographs and some short but densely-argued theological treatises, all of which were enormously influential on medieval thought. But Boethius was more than a writer who passed on important ancient ideas to the Middle Ages.
