En el siglo XVIII, y sin que ello signifique el abandono del barroco, como hemos visto, se inicia un movimiento de vuelta a la antigüedad que va a perdurar en los comienzos del siglo XIX. A ello van a contribuir los descubrimientos arqueológicos de Pompeya y Herculano, y los trabajos de los alemanes J. J. Winckelman (m.1768), arqueólogo que propulsó las investigaciones científicas, y del teórico G. E. Lessing (m.1781), autor del Laocoonte. Este movimiento se inscribe en el marco de cientifismo y racionalismo del XVIII, siglo en que la «razón» se situó frente a la religiosidad exacerbada, generando una corriente de pensamiento denominada Ilustración (en alemán Aufklärung), por lo que se le llamó el «Siglo de las luces». Los principales representantes de este movimiento son los franceses Montesquieu, autor de El espíritu de las leyes, de gran peso en la ideología de la Revolución francesa, Voltaire, anticatólico declarado, y Rousseau, defensor de las ideas sobre la bondad natural del hombre y lo pernicioso de la sociedad, autor de El contrato social.
