This study examines armored warfare in a jungle environment. The focus is to determine if there is a role for ground mounted armored forces in jungle warfare. This study explains how armor was used in past jungle conflicts and examines current doctrine and applicability of employment of armor in the jungle. The first portion of the research focuses on discerning how armor was used in past jungle conflicts. The Pacific campaign of World War II and the Vietnam War are examined to determine the historical role of armor in a jungle environment. Early employment of armor in these two conflicts is examined to determine the criteria for use of armored forces in the jungle and examines the tactics, techniques, and procedures that were developed during these conflicts. The second portion of this study focuses on the feasibility of current employment of armor in a jungle environment. Current Army and Marine armored doctrine is examined and interviews are conducted to determine if current armored systems could and should be employed in jungle warfare. Additionally, officers from foreign countries are interviewed to determine how armored forces are employed in the jungle areas of their countries.

This monograph examines the adequacy of current jungle and infantry doctrine in addressing the conduct of night operations in jungle environment. Daytime jungle operations already have much in common with night operations in general due to the limited visibility afforded by the dense vegetation. The degree of difficulty increases dramatically when operating during darkness. Such operations require a thorough understanding of why, when, and how to conduct them. This monograph first examines the night jungle operations conducted during WWII and the Vietnam Conflict to gain a historical perspective of the types of operations conducted in the past as well as their success. It then reviews and analyzes current doctrine for night fighting to determine its applicability to a jungle environment. Next, the monograph contrasts past night jungle operations with current doctrine and concludes that current doctrine does not sufficiently address the conduct of night jungle warfare. Lastly, the monograph offers some recommendations for inclusion to doctrine to address the shortcomings identified.

In jungle warfare, the soldier often fights two enemies: man and nature. The elimination of nature as an enemy and the use of the jungle itself as an ally are training objectives fully as important as the elimination of the human enemy. The soldier must be trained not to fight the jungle: he must be capable of living successf ully in it and making it work for him against the human enemy. The jungle is a strict taskmaster: unless an individual adjusts himself to the conditions imposed by jungle environment, he will be unable to exist long, even if there is no human enemy. It must be remembered that the difficulties imposed by jungle environment are impartially imposed upon enemy as well as friendly troops, and that the unit which better overcomes the difficulties imposed by the environment has a distinct advantage over the opposing force.
