Though development researchers have proven that the participation of women is necessary for effective sustainable development, development practitioners still largely lack culturally appropriate, gender-sensitive tools for including women, especially women living in poverty. Current tools used in the development approach often favour the skill set of the development practitioner and are a mismatch with the traditional, gendered knowledge and skills many women who are living in poverty do have. This study explores three case studies from India, Ethiopia, and the Guatemala that have successfully used applied theatre for women’s participation in sustainable development. This thesis examines applied theatre, drama, and performance as an intervention tool for homelessness and poverty through the work of the Los Angeles Poverty Department (LAPD) theatre company. LAPD has intervened with homeless issues and poverty through performance in Los Angeles for the last 35 years. Three primary ideas are explored in this thesis: how LAPD theatre creates hope in participants, creates empathy in audience and highlights political activism and creates positive social change. Part of the goal of this thesis is to reconnect a new generation with the processes of hope and empathy through performance and highlight effective methods that introduce participatory democratic processes through theatre arts. This thesis considers the philosophies and framework of applied theatre theorists, Dr. Peter O'Connor author of Applied Theatre: Research and Radical Departures, and Dr. Gareth White Applied Theatre: Aesthetics. It also considers philosophies and techniques of theatre practitioners, Augusto Boal (Theatre of the Oppressed), Artistic Director and Founder John Malpede and Associate Director Henriëtte Brouwers of LAPD theatre company. This thesis illustrates LAPD's history, accomplishments, and performances that have influenced and created social justice and change. It incorporates data, research, interviews, testimonials, news, and peer reviewed articles on LAPD, applied theatre, and theatre practitioners. Primary and secondary research is utilized as is my contributions as a participant observer based on my active involvement at LAPD for over a year. Having conversations about gender and racial justice and actively engaging in performance-based change work can be complex and difficult. As a facilitator of performance work focused on social justice, I am tasked with constantly learning about and reflecting on my own complicated relationships to race, gender, injustice and its many manifestations. While I have the privilege to work with young people as they journey through their own process of discovery and exploration, the process of simultaneously guiding others and the self to explore gender and racial justice through theatre, creates experiences of fear, uncertainty, and deep questioning in my work. Therefore, with this study, I explore how adrienne maree brown's theories on sustainable activism and social justice practices offer pathways towards acknowledging, questioning and moving through moments of fear in applied theatre. Borrowing from adrienne maree brown's writing on sustainable activism in Emergent Strategy, I look at two of her core concepts in relation to my own work with young people in the Performing Justice Project: 1. valuing small scale growth and change (fractals) 2. honoring nonlinear growth and transformation, I apply and then analyze how a focus on small scale growth and change and nonlinear growth and transformation shape my own ability to address moments of fear and move toward gender and racial justice with young participants. Using reflective practitioner research, this MFA thesis examines how the artist-facilitator might acknowledge and recognize moments where fear arises to use emergent strategies in performance-based work to engage the body in moving past fear in order to envision and perform justice

Applied Theatre: Performing Health and Wellbeing is the first volume in the field to address the role that theatre, drama and performance have in relation to promoting, developing and sustaining health and wellbeing in diverse communities. Challenging concepts and understanding of health, wellbeing and illness, it offers insight into different approaches to major health issues through applied performance. With a strong emphasis on the artistry involved in performance-based health responses, situated within a history of the field of practice, the volume is divided into two sections: Part One examines some of the key questions around research and practice in applied performance in health and wellbeing, specifically addressing the different regional challenges that dominate the provision of health care and influence wellbeing: how the ageing population of the global north creates pressure on lifetime healthcare provision, while the global south is dominated by a higher birth rate and a larger population under 15 years old. Part Two comprises case studies and interviews from international practitioners that reflect the diversity of practices across the world and in particular differences between work in the northern and southern hemispheres.
