Book Description
Recent years have seen a rapid growth in the field of applied optics and optoelectronics, mostly from the standpoints of industrial applications and research. This has largely been due to the advantages that optical technology offers in a wide range of situations and thus the research into and anticipation of future applications is an area that is subject to considerable international interest. Applied Optics and Optoelectronics 1998 incorporates a broad spectrum of scientists and engineers from around the world. The book includes contributions from the IOP Optical Group, Instrument Science and Technology Group, and the Fringe Analysis Special Interest Group, and the wide range of contents reflects the interdisciplinary nature of the subject that will help to facilitate the cross fertilization of ideas within the community. The proceedings comprise papers from the following program streams: optics; actuators, sensors, and instrumentation; fringe analysis; and underwater optics.

Recent years have seen a rapid growth in the field of Applied Optics and Optoelectronics, mostly from the standpoints of industrial applications and research. This has largely been due to the advantages that optical technology offers in a wide range of situations and thus the research into, and anticipation of, future applications is an area which is subject to considerable worldwide interest. This conference, held at the University of Reading in September 1996, incorporated a broad spectrum of scientists and engineers from around the world. The proceedings includes contributions from the IOP Optical Group, Instrument Science and Technology Group and the Fringe Analysis Special Interest Group and the wide range of contents reflects the interdisciplinary nature of the subject which will help to facilitate the cross fertilization of ideas within the community. In total, 79 papers are presented comprising three sections, these being Applied Optics, Fringe Analysis and Optical Instrumentation and Photonic Sensing.

Book Description
Holographic and speckle interferometry are optical techniques which use lasers to make non-contracting field view measurements at a sensitivity of the wavelength of light on optically rough (i.e. non-mirrored) surfaces. They may be used to measure static or dynamic displacements, the shape of objects, and refractive index variations of transparent media. As such, these techniques have been applied to the solution of a wide range of problems in strain and vibrational analysis, non-destructive testing (NDT), component inspection and design analysis and fluid flow visualisation. This book provides a self-contained, unified, theoretical analysis of the basic principles and associated opto-electronic techniques (for example Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry). In addition, a detailed discussion of experimental design and practical application to the solution of physical problems is presented. In this new edition, the authors have taken the opportunity to include a much more coherent description of more than twenty individual case studies that are representative of the main uses to which the techniques are put. The Bibliography has also been brought up to date.

Book Description
Over the concluding decades of the twentieth century, the historic preservation community increasingly turned its attention to modern buildings, including bungalows from the 1930s, gas stations and diners from the 1940s, and office buildings and architectural homes from the 1950s. Conservation efforts, however, were often hampered by a lack of technical information about the products used in these structures, and to fill this gap Twentieth-Century Building Materials was developed by the U.S. Department of the Interior’s National Park Service and first published in 1995. Now, this invaluable guide is being reissued—with a new preface by the book’s original editor. With more than 250 illustrations, including a full-color photographic essay, the volume remains an indispensable reference on the history and conservation of modern building materials. Thirty-seven essays written by leading experts offer insights into the history, manufacturing processes, and uses of a wide range of materials, including glass block, aluminum, plywood, linoleum, and gypsum board. Readers will also learn about how these materials perform over time and discover valuable conservation and repair techniques. Bibliographies and sources for further research complete the volume. The book is intended for a wide range of conservation professionals including architects, engineers, conservators, and material scientists engaged in the conservation of modern buildings, as well as scholars in related disciplines.
