was letting myself in for. During early 1987 The aim of this volume in the British Micro palaeontological Society (BMS) Occasional my initial task was to invite various experts to contribute to individual, stratigraphically Publication Series is to review the present state of knowledge concerning the stratigraphic arranged chapters. Having finalized the list of contributors, we were able to establish, not distribution of dinoflagellate cysts in British sediments. only the objectives of the volume, but also a I stress that this volume is one in the BMS preferred format. Series and, as such, does not purport to repre After initial negotiations with the then pub lisher of the BMS Series, Ellis Horwood sent stratigraphic coverage of areas outside the territories of the British Isles. However, Limited, a contract was signed on 18th Janu in certain stratigraphic sections, applicability ary 1988 with a completion date of 31st July to northwest Europe is appropriate. No global 1989. However, it soon became apparent that scale is implied. this was a totally unrealistic goal and, as a Since the BMS introduced its Occasional result, it was re-negotiated to 1st December Publication Series in 1978, it has been obvious 1989. Since then, progress has been somewhat that a large gap has existed in its range.

Book Description
This is the first volume in the English language to cover the entire range of the geology of Thailand since the joint Thai-US account by Brown et al. exactly 60 years ago. Over this period there has been a phenomenal growth in interest in this core area of SE Asia. This has been led by geologists in Thailand, but with important and highly significant input from geologists based elsewhere in Asia and in Europe, Australasia and North America. Some of that research was prompted by commercial considerations, since Thailand has important energy and mineral resources, while other research has sought to understand better the stratigraphic and structural history, including the plate-tectonic story which Thailand's rocks reveal. This new volume seeks to bring together all of this knowledge into a single accessible book; it is the work of an international team drawn from Thailand, Japan, Australia, USA, Canada, Germany and the UK.

Book Description
This book is intended as a practical handbook for those engaged in the task of analyzing the paleogeographic evolution of ancient sedimentary basins. The science of stratigraphy and sedimentology is central to such endeavors, but although several excellent textbooks on sedimentology have appeared in recent years little has been written about modern stratigraphic methods. Sedimentology textbooks tend to take a theoretical approach, building from physical and chemical theory and studies of mod ern environments. It is commonly difficult to apply this information to practical problems in ancient rocks, and very little guidance is given on methods of observation, mapping and interpretation. In this book theory is downplayed and the emphasis is on what a geologist can actually see in outcrops, well records, and cores, and what can be ob tained using geophysical techniques. A new approach is taken to stratigraphy, which attempts to explain the genesis of lithostratigraphic units and to de-emphasize the importance of formal description and nam ing. There are also sections explaining principles of facies analysis, basin mapping methods, depositional systems, and the study of basin thermal history, so important to the genesis of fuels and minerals. Lastly, an at tempt is made to tie everything together by considering basins in the con text of plate tectonics and eustatic sea level changes.

Book Description
The Neuquen Basin of northern Patagonia provides an excellent case study in basin analysis and sequence stratigraphy. The basin is one of the largest petroleum provinces in South America and includes a dramatic record of relative sea level changes as well as a unique and globally important palaeontological record. Understanding this region is also central to unravelling the history of the Andes. The latest developments in the study of the area have been combined in this volume to give an integrated series of case studies that document the structural, igneous, sedimentological and palaeontological history of the region from the Triassic to the Recent. This publication provides an introduction into this fascinating region as well as a resource that includes the most complete and up-to-date studies of the area.
