Ma loi d'avenir. Claire Démar Date de l'édition originale: 1834 Un voile de mystère recouvre la vie de Claire Démar, dont on ignore même jusqu'à l'essentiel, à commencer par son identité l'année de sa naissance est incertaine, et on ne sait si son nom était réellement « Démar » ou bien « Desmare », elle-même signant parfois ses lettres « Émilie d'Eymard »; concernant ses origines enfi n, aucun élément tangible ne permet de les établir. Elle aurait été proche des mouvements républicains, avant de découvrir le saint-simonisme. Cette doctrine tant philosophique, économique que politique, voyait dans le progrès et l'industrialisation la voie d'émancipation du prolétariat. Séduite par les aspirations féministes et égalitaires du saint-simonisme, Claire Démar en devient une prosélyte fervente et dévouée. En 1830, portée par l'abolition de la censure après l'avènement de la monarchie de Juillet, la presse connait un essor important. Claire Démar collabore avec des journaux dont les noms mêmes ne laissent aucun doute quant à son engagement pour la cause féministe La Femme libre, La Femme nouvelle ou encore L'Apostolat des femmes. Elle publie en 1833 dans un journal son Appel d'une femme au peuple sur l'affranchissement de la femme en rupture complète avec la morale et le conformisme de son temps, elle prône notamment l'amour libre et s'oppose au mariage qu'elle condamne comme une forme de prostitution légalisée. Son discours prend la forme d'une exhortation « Peuple, tu ne seras véritablement libre, véritablement grand, que le jour où la moitié de ta vie, ta mère, ton épouse et ta fi lle, seront, elles aussi, affranchies de l'exploitation qui pèse sur leur sexe. » Lasse d'être incomprise, déconsidérée et conspuée, sans soutien, elle met fi n à ses jours le 3 août 1833 dans un dernier geste tragique, avec son compagnon, Perret Desessarts. Son testament prend la forme d'un texte, Ma loi d'avenir, qu'elle destine à la Famille saint-simonienne. Son amie Suzanne Voilquin, alors rédactrice en chef, le publie à titre posthume dans La Tribune des femmes, et cesse défi nitivement la parution du journal. Passé longtemps inaperçu, pourtant véritable brûlot, ce cri de révolte surprend encore aujourd'hui par son absolue modernité et ses fulgurances. Ce livre, réimprimé en fac-similé par Hachette-BnF, est identique à la publication originale de 1834 conservée à la Bibliothèque nationale de France. What did it mean to call someone 'eccentric' in nineteenth-century Paris? And why did breaking with convention arouse such ambivalent responses in middle-class readers, writers, and spectators? From high society to Bohemia and the demi-monde to the madhouse, the scandal of nonconformism provoked anxiety, disgust, and often secret yearning. In a culture preoccupied by the need for order yet simultaneously drawn to the values of freedom and innovation, eccentricity continually tested the boundaries of bourgeois identity, ultimately becoming inseparable from it. This interdisciplinary study charts shifting French perceptions of the anomalous and bizarre from the 1830s to the fin de siècle, focusing on three key issues. First, during the July Monarchy eccentricity was linked to fashion, dandyism, and commodity culture; to many Parisians it epitomized the dangerous seductions of modernity and the growing prestige of the courtesan. Second, in the aftermath of the 1848 Revolution eccentricity was associated with the Bohemian artists and performers who inhabited 'the unknown Paris', a zone of social exclusion which middle-class spectators found both fascinating and repugnant. Finally, the popularization of medical theories of national decline in the latter part of the century led to decreasing tolerance for individual difference, and eccentricity was interpreted as a symptom of hidden insanity and deformity. Drawing on a wide range of sources, including etiquette manuals, fashion magazines, newspapers, novels, and psychiatric treatises, the study highlights the central role of gender in shaping perceptions of eccentricity. It provides new readings of works by major French writers and illuminates both well-known and neglected figures of Parisian modernity, from the courtesan and Bohemian to the female dandy and circus freak.

However, when gender-neutral criteria are applied, Mina de Vanghel, Vanina Vanini, Mathilde de La Mole, and Lamiel can all be shown to enact extraordinary experiments in freedom. These experiments are all the more remarkable in view of the gender of their agents, the historical situation of the author (1783-1842), and the conventions of the literary movement that his fiction helped to found: realism. Simone de Beauvoir's 1949 study of Stendhal's heroines gives preference to the reserved females over his Amazons.
