Communication for Another Development
Author: Wendy Quarry
Publisher: Zed Books Ltd.
ISBN: 1848136307
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 133
Book Description
This lively book argues that in the development process, communication is everything. The authors, world experts in this field as teachers, practitioners and theorists, argue that Communication for Development is a creative and innovative way of thinking that can permeate the overall approach to any development initiative. They illustrate their argument with vivid case studies and tools for the reader, drawing on the stories of individual project leaders who have championed development for communication, and using a range of situations to show the different possibilities in various contexts. Free from jargon, and keeping a close look at how development is actually being implemented at ground level, this book is an important contribution to development studies not just for students but also for development practitioners and policy makers.

Toward a New Strategy for Development
Author: Albert O. Hirschman
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483188949
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 384
Book Description
Toward a New Strategy for Development: A Rothko Chapel Colloquium is a collection of papers commissioned by the Rothko Chapel and presented at a colloquium held in Houston, Texas on February 3-5, 1977. The colloquium provided a forum for discussing the need for a new strategy for development, with emphasis on needs and programs from the perspectives of the developed countries at the center of the world's economic system and of the developing countries at its periphery, and from the standpoint of different disciplines. Comprised of 10 chapters, this book begins with an introduction to Marxism and its congruence with other neoclassical doctrines such as the Chicago School, followed by a discussion on development economics as well as the conditions that gave rise to the rapidly growing interest in development. The next chapter traces the origins and history of one major body of Latin American ideas on development since the early 1950s: the United Nation's Economic Commission for Latin America. Subsequent chapters explore internal issues of development within countries, with emphasis on urban and rural bias as well as factors that influence regional development policy; the postwar economic experience of the Third World; and the reactions of developed countries to calls for a new international economic order. This monograph will be of interest to economists and sociologists.

Democracy and Development in Latin America
Author: David Lehmann
Publisher: Temple University Press
ISBN: 9781566390118
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 260
Book Description
Soloway (history, U. of N. Carolina) unravels the development and context of the eugenics movement which promoted a theory of biosocial engineering through selective reproduction during the early years of the 20th century. He connects the rise of the movement to anxieties about the size and social composition of the population and discusses the movement's special relevance as progenitor of more recent ideas of sociobiological engineering. Lehmann (development studies, Cambridge Univ.) presents an intellectual history of Latin America over the past 40 years, focusing on Argentina, Brazil, and Chile. He integrates three strains of development: the intellectual currents of social science, the renovation of Catholic thought and practice, and the emergence of popular social movements. Accessible to non-specialists. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
