Book Description
This handsome two-volume set is one of the most thorough works on early Southwest Virginia and contains the journals of Colonel Thomas Batts, Dr. Thomas Walker, and Colonel Christopher Gist--three of the region's earliest explorers to record their journeys. The volumes also include lists of soldiers who served in the Revolutionary War, the French-Indian War, and the Indian wars prior to 1800. Also compiled are the early records of most of the land surveys and marriages, briefs of deeds and wills, and the court minutes of Botetourt, Fincastle, Montgomery, Washington, and Wythe counties. In addition, the set includes reprints of George Bickley's 1856 "History of Tazewell County" and Charles B. Coale's "Wilburn Waters."

Book Description
Across more than six generations—beginning before the Revolutionary War—the Breckinridge family has produced a series of notable leaders. These often controversial men and women included a presidential candidate, a U.S. vice president, cabinet members, generals, women's rights advocates, congressmen, editors, reformers, authors, and church leaders. Along with success, the Breckinridges, like other Americans, faced hardship and war, contended with race, lived through difficult family situations—including a sex scandal—and encountered personal and political failure. An articulate, opinionated, and frank family, the Breckinridges have left a detailed record that allows us a vivid recreation of the range of American history and society.

Book Description
No one played a more important role in the settlement of Clark County than Capt. William "Billy" Bush. Born in Orange County, Virginia, Billy came out with Daniel Boone in 1775, resided for a time at Fort Boonesborough, then spent the rest of his life living a few miles from the fort. He thus became one of the first permanent settlers in Kentucky. Billy was also a key figure in establishing Providence Baptist Church, the first church in Clark County. Their place of worship-the Old Stone Church-is now the oldest church on Kentucky soil. Billy Bush laid claim to thousands of acres of land between Winchester and the Kentucky River, and Daniel Boone ran the surveys for him. This land became the foundation of the Bush Settlement.
