Book Description
The Amerasia affair was the first of the great spy cases of the postwar era. Unlike the Hiss or Rosenberg case, it did not lead to an epic courtroom confrontation or the imprisonment or execution of any of the principals, and perhaps for this reason, it has been largely ignored by historians. Harvey Klehr and Ronald Radosh provide a full-scale history of the first public drama featuring charges that respectable American citizens had spied for the Communists. It is a story with few heroes, many villains, and more than a few knaves. In June 1945, six people associated with the magazine Amerasia were arrested by the FBI and accused of espionage on behalf of the Chinese Communists. But only Philip Jaffe, editor of Amerasia, and Emmanuel Larsen, a government employee, were convicted of any offense, and their convictions were merely for unauthorized possession of government documents. Klehr and Radosh are the first researchers to have obtained the FBI files on the Amerasia case, including transcripts of wiretaps on the telephones, homes, and hotel rooms of the suspects, and they use this material to re-create the actual words and actions of the defendants.

Book Description
"If I Had a Hammer unearths the roots of the counter-culture and political radicalism of the 60s, and shatters the myth of the 50s as a decade of deadening conformity. For the 'Old Left,' the 50s were indeed a decade of defeat and disillusionment, as Maurice Isserman demonstrates through incisive and poignant portraits of aging radicals, including Irving Howe, Norman Thomas, and A. J. Muste. But defeat also compelled a reexamination of cherished beliefs, like the myth of the revolutionary proletariat, and facing up to new political realities, like the domestic consequences of the Cold War. Old dogmas were discarded along with old dreams. Professor Isserman challenges the current notion that the radicalism of the 60s was mere psychological aberration. He also dispels a favorite illusion of the 'New Left' itself--that it was borne by immaculate conception without ties to a 'Old Left' it pointedly repudiated. Ironically, the 'New Left' drew lessons from its predecessor never intended by the 'Old Left,' while it repeated mistakes it found unforgivable in the parent it disowned. If I Had a Hammer calls into question our favored assumptions about this pregnant moment in American history." -- Book jacket

Behind all the bipartisanship, dimpled-chad Democrats are sharpening their knives for 2002. But David Horowitzwhose Art of Political War helped put George W. Bush in the White Houseis back with an indispensable manual for wartime politics. If the Democrats thought wed forget who demoralized our military, eviscerated the CIA, and let America become a playground for terrorists, theyre in for a rude awakening. How to Beat the Democrats makes sure it wont be politics as usual in 2002.For Democrats, politics is permanent war. Every conflict is a contest for power, every battle is about burying their enemiesRepublicans. With racial shakedown artists and intolerant progressives rearing their heads at homeand terrorists striking at us from abroadHorowitzs uncompromising and principled commitment to freedom is more needed than ever.Horowitzs opening salvo shows why the Democrats cant be trusted with the nations security. For years, the party has subordinated sound defense policy to a radical ideology untamed even by September 11. Horowitzs unmatched strategic powers are on full display in his enumeration of the principles for a winning political campaign, which he then applies to the specific issues that will shape the 2002 election. Returning to the subject of war, he concludes with an exposi of the anti-American escapades of Noam Chomsky and his comrades of the unrepentant left.In How to Beat the Democrats, youll learn: The four fundamental principles of politics Six lessons from the near-heist of the 2000 election Democratic plans for revenge in 2002 Horowitzs bold strategy for GOP victory How the left still tries to undermine American defense
