Relative High Energy Neutron Yields from Targets Bombarded with Protons and Deuterons (UCRL-440)
Author: William J. Knox
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Bismuth
Languages : en
Pages : 30
Book Description
Relative neutron yields in the forward direction from various target elements bombarded with 350 Mev protons and 190 Mev deuterons have been measured. Bismuth fission chambers with a threshold of about 50 Mev were used to detect the high energy neutrons. The actual flux of protons or deuterons traversing each target was determined from the activities induced in graphite monitors attached to the target. When a deuteron beam is used, the neutron yields for light elements agree with the values predicted by the deuteron stripping theory. For the heavy elements the observed values are fitted best by adding a function proportional to Z-sq to the stripping theory values. This may be interpreted as evidence for the production of high energy neutrons by the electric field disintegration of the deuteron. The neutron yields from the proton beam vary approximately as (A - Z)(exp(2/3)) for target elements from C to U. This indicates that the heavy elements are not completely transparent to 350 Mev protons. Beryllium has an anomalous neutron yield 50% higher than that for C. Calculations and measurements on the problem of multiple traversals of beam particles through thin targets are presented.

The High-energy Charged Particles from Targets Bombarded by 190 Mev Deuterons (thesis)

Pages : 96
Book Description
An investigation has been made of the angle and energy distributions of the high energy charged particles which emerge from beryllium, carbon, and uranium nuclei bombarded by 190 Mev deuterons. The results indicate that the yields can be explained as primarily due to two kinds of processes; nucleon-nucleon interactions, and stripping. Under this assumption, the total stripping cross section has been determined to be 0.35 ℗± 0.03 barns for the lighter elements and 2.6 ℗± 0.4 barns for uranium. These values suggest an A2/3 dependence for this cross section.

Physics of Nuclei and Particles
Author: Pierre Marmier
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 1483262804
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 685
Book Description
Physics of Nuclei and Particles, Volume II explores the prevalent descriptive methods used in nuclear and particle physics, with emphasis on the phenomenological and model-based aspects. The interactions of nuclear particles are discussed, along with nuclear forces and potentials and scattering and reaction models employed in nuclear physics. The nuclear structure and models of the nucleus are also considered. Comprised of four chapters, this volume begins with a review of the characteristics of nucleons and other particles that play a role in nuclear interaction processes in order to gain further insight into the underlying physical problems. Neutron physics, antinucleons, deuteron physics, and two-body nuclear forces are highlighted, together with three- and four- nucleon systems and heavy-ion physics. The next three chapters deal with nuclear forces and potentials, as deduced from nuclear dynamics (scattering and polarization); scattering and reaction models used in nuclear physics; and nuclear models such as the shell model, models of deformed nuclei, and many-body self-consistent models. The book concludes with an analysis of the Brueckner-Bethe-Goldstone theory of nuclear matter. This book will be of interest to physicists.

Unravelling the Mystery of the Atomic Nucleus
Author: Bernard Fernandez
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461441803
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 541
Book Description
Unravelling the Mystery of the Atomic Nucleus is a history of atomic and nuclear physics. It begins in 1896 with the discovery of radioactivity, which leads to the discovery of the nucleus at the center of the atom. It follows the experimental discoveries and the theoretical developments up to the end of the Fifties. Unlike previous books regarding on history of nuclear physics, this book methodically describes how advances in technology enabled physicists to probe the physical properties of nuclei as well as how the physical laws which govern these microscopic systems were progressively discovered. The reader will gain a clear understanding of how theory is inextricably intertwined with the progress of technology. Unravelling the Mystery of the Atomic Nucleus will be of interest to physicists and to historians of physics, as well as those interested development of science.
