Book Description
Recent advances in jet ejectors operating under static conditions have produced high thrust augmentation that is feasible for application to V/STOL flight. However, because of (a) loss in augmentation in duct flow, (b) ramjet effect, and (c) space limitations, high performance and compactness are required in the design of thrust-augmenting ejectors for V/STOL aircraft. An analytical inverse approach is presented in which the pressure distribution along the diffuser wall of an ejector is defined for a given entrance flow condition and the contour of the desired diffuser wall is determined by using a finite difference technique. The prescribed pressure distribution is first optimized by a modified Stratford criterion for incipient separation of turbulent boundary layers; this optimization makes it applicable to compressible two-dimensional and axisymmetric flows.

Book Description
A jet ejector may be used as a compressor or to enhance thrust of watercraft or aircraft. Optimization of jet ejectors as compressors and thrust augmenters was conducted using the software GAMBIT (Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) tool for geometry and mesh generation) and FLUENT (Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) solver kit). Scripting languages PYTHON and SCHEME were used to automate this process. The CFD model employed 2D axis symmetric, steady-state flow using the k - E method (including wall functions) to model turbulence. Initially, non-dimensionalization of the jet ejector as a gas compressor was performed with respect to scale, fluid, and operating pressure. Surprisingly, rather than the conventional parameters like Mach or Re number, the results showed a completely new parameter (christenedGM- Gauge Mach) that when kept constant will result in non-dimensionalization. Non-dimensionalization of a jet ejector for watercraft propulsion was conducted using 2D axis symmetric, steady-state flow modeling using the k - E method (including wall functions). It showed consistent results for the same velocity ratio (r) of nozzle velocity to free-stream velocity for different scales, fluids, and ambient pressures.

Book Description
Development of thrust augmenting ejectors has produced ejector/diffuser configurations capable of achieving the high levels of thrust augmentation necessary for VTOL aircraft propulsion requirements. Experimental testing has shown that thrust augmenting ejectors can be made more compact by reducing diffuser length with active diffusion boundary layer control employing the Antiseparation Tailored Contour (ATC). Thrust augmentation and internal flow measurements were determined in compact high performance thrust augmentors with various length diffusers. The short ATC/diffusers tested showed significant improvements when compared to previous ejector diffusers. Measured thrust augmentation ratios with an optimum short ATC/diffuser were 10% greater than those with an equivalent straight wall diffuser. Length reductions of 36% were indicated for nominal augmentation ratios of 1.7. The important factors which influence the design and operation of compact thrust augmentor ejector/diffusers have been defined. (Author).

Book Description
An investigation was conducted to determine the jet thrust augmentation under static conditions for rectangular parallel-divergent wall ejector configurations with multiple primary nozzles. The effect of various geometrical and flow parameters were investigated in order to provide design information. Parameters investigated included the ratio of the ejector exit area to the primary nozzle area, the diffuser angle, the mixing section length, the primary nozzle position, the entrance radius, the number of primary nozzle rows, and the primary nozzle pressure ratio and temperature ratio. The test results are generalized to obtain curves relating the augmentation factor to ejector geometry and flow parameters over a wide range of ejector exit to primary nozzle area ratios. (Author).
