The purpose of this investigation is to obtain information which will contribute to a better understanding of the strength and behavior of deep beams of reinforced concrete and steel subjected to slowly and rapidly applied loading, and to develop means for the prediction of this behavior. This report contains the following: (1) a thorough survey of the literature pertaining to the behavior of deep beams subjected to static and dynamic loads; (2) the results of static tests of twenty-three simply-supported, deep, reinforced concrete beams, fourteen under uniform loading and nine with a single concentrated load at midspan; (3) the results of dynamic tests on two simply-supported, deep, reinforced concrete beams; and (4) the results of one test of a deep, steel beam of I-shape cross section subjected to slowly-applied uniform loading. Experimental results are compared with theory. (Author).
