Book Description
Excerpt from An Introductory Lecture on Political Economy When I consider how numerous those adversa ries are, and how widely diffused are thelprej udices which they excite and propagate, all - apprehension for myselfis lost inthe fear that the failures of the professor may be imputed to his. Subject, and' that the vague abstractions, the details, the truisms, the obscurities, and the; inconsistencies which, with all my care, will, I have no: doubt,2 be found in my lectures, may rather deter: those among my hearers to whom the subject is new from proceeding int a study which, in my hands, may, appear uninterest ing, than lead them toprosecute it in the writings of the great masters of the science, and by-patient meditation on the results of their own experience.. Book Description
Excerpt from Introductory Lectures on Political Economy: Being Part of a Course, Delivered in Easter Term, MDCCCXXXI The following pages are presented'to the public, in compliance with a requisition of the Statute relative to the Professorship of political-economy, that one Lecture at least shall be published every year. Conceiving that one object of that pro vision must be, that the public may have some knowledge of what sort of Lectures on the subject are annually delivered at Oxford, 1 have not thought myself at liberty to make any material alterations in the Lectures as they'were delivered. Otherwise, I might, perhaps, have endea voured to change the method and the style; adopted with a View to oral de livery, for such as might be more suited to the closet. Perhaps, indeed, I might, but for that requisition, have hesitated as to the publication of such a Work at all. For the title of it is not unlikely to deter one class of readers, and to disappoint another. Those who have never applied themselves to the study, may perhaps be led to anticipate, from the title of Political Economy, something dry, abstruse, and uninteresting; and those again who are, and have long been, conversant with it may perhaps expect such' discussions of various important questions, as I have thought it best not to enter on, in an in troductory Course. It has been my first object, to combat the prevailing prejudices against the study. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Four Introductory Lectures on Political Economy, Delivered Before the University of Oxford At the same time, the avowed writers on this sub ject have been more numerous than those on any other science or. Art. If we look at our principal reviews, we Shall find that a large portion of each number is dedicated to it. M. Say has been translated over and over, into every language in Europe. I have seen three different translations of his great work published in different parts of Spain. In the United States of America there are newspapers exclusively devoted to it, and it has professors in almost every university in Europe, and in North America. Has then, I will ask, and it was as an introduction to these questions that I have ventured on so long a preface, - has the progress of Political Economy been in proportion to the ardour with which it has been urged If it has not been so, by what causes has its progress been retarded? And are they causes within our control? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
