Book Description
Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of American Literature This book is intended as an introduction to the study of American literature. Although the chapters on the separate authors are wholly distinct, they have been so planned that each of them prepares the way for its suc cessor, and that all of them together outline the changing circumstances under which American literature has devel oped. An attempt has been made to show how each of the chief American authors influenced his time, and how he in turn was influenced by it; and also to indicate how each of them was related to the others, both personally and artistically. Bearing in mind the fact that the student needs to have his attention centered on vital points, all dates and all proper names, and all titles of books not absolutely essen tial, have been rigorously omitted. Interest has thus been concentrated on the literary career of each of the greater writers and on their practice of the literary art, in the hope and expectation that the student will be encouraged and stimulated to read their works for his own pleasure. After the consideration of these more important authors, one by one, the writers of less consequence have been discussed briefly in a single Chapter; and in like manner a single chapter has been devoted to a summary considera tion of the condition of our literature at the beginning Of the twentieth century. NO living author is named in the text. To arouse the student's interest in the authors as actual men, the illustrations chosen have been confined to por traits and views, and to facsimiles of manuscripts. To enable him to see for himself the successive stages of the growth of American literature, and to let him dis cover how the authors sometimes came one after an other and sometimes worked side by side, there has been appended also a chronological table of the chief dates in our literary history. As mere text-book instruction can never be an adequate substitute for the student's own acquaintance with the actual works of the authors discussed, there have been annexed to every chapter bibliographical notes calling attention to the editions most suitable for the student's reading, and also to the best biographies and to a few of the most suggestive criticisms. Book Description
Excerpt from An Introduction to American Literature "Democracy is still on trial. It must justify itself or die. Lowell states one of the standards thus: 'Democracy must show its capacity for producing, not a higher average man, but the highest possible types of manhood in all its manifold varieties, or it is a failure.' ... That this highest type of manhood may be attained in our country, under the existing opportunities of self-development, has been frequently claimed, and if this life be possible, then the expression of it should be also. The highest possible type of literature should succeed the highest possible type of manhood. ... This national literature must be the development, consciously or unconsciously, of all the best literary powers of the best American people. Such a national literature is indispensable to the union of these States - not that union based upon the consent of the governed, and bound by political regulations of their making but the essential union of common sentiments' and ideals secured by a common pride in intellectual achievement, and a partnership in patriotism." - Professor Charles F. Kent's Inaugural Address on Literature and life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Study of American Literature In this volume the attempt has been made to distinguish the salient epochs in our literature, brief though the story is. The relation of the artist and his work to the general life of his time and of his people has been frequently recalled. This relation is especially illustrated in the chronological tables, which may be supplemented from the regular textbooks in American history. Nevertheless, the treatment in our text itself is in the main biographical. That is, the effort has almost always been to make the single life appear an articulated and rational whole. This method craves far more space than was here available; but, as Miss Scudder remarks of her similar undertaking for English literature, any such volume as ours must serve merely as an introduction to far wider reading. The writer believes that biographical treatment is the most intelligible to the young reader. It also seems to him the most truthful. That the artist, more than other men, can escape largely from local or temporal limitations, and find his spiritual kin, seems undeniable; yet from his truest self he cannot escape. Even when the artistic activity seems most detached from the man, as in Hawthorne, or even in Poe, the work will be better understood by a sympathetic study of the life, the whole life. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of American Literature The general purpose in the preparation of this book has, been to eliminate negligible detail and to subordinate or omit authors of minor importance in order to stress the men and the movements that are most significant in American intel lectual history/ The book has therefore been written with a view to showing the drift of American thought as illustrated by major writers or groups and as revealed by a careful study of one or two cardinal works by each. In this sequence of thought the growth of American self-consciousness and the changing ideals of American patriotism have been kept in mind throughout. The attempt is made to induce study of representative classics and extensive reading of the American literature which illuminates the past of the country chiefly, of course, in reminiscent fiction, drama, and poetry. Book Description
Excerpt from A Brief History of American Literature In this book, which is designed for the use of schools, I - have endeavoured to furnish a condensed account of the development of American literature, rather than a series of connected essays on leading American authors. At the same time I have tried to mention no writer or book devoid of a fair amount of significance, and I have also had it in mind to treat the more important authors on a scale sufficiently extended to suit the needs of the average class. I have aimed to minimize tentative criticism and to give only such details of historical setting as could not well be spared. I have condensed the bibliographical information to dimensions more or less proportionate with the resources of school libraries and have divided it into sections according to chapters. The period from 1866 to the present day has been sketched in a chapter, fuller treatment of writers, many of whom are still living, not seeming advisable in view of the difficulty of maintaining an impartial attitude toward contemporaries. An appendix gives important dates, which may be used in lieu of those scattered through the text. Topics for essays and class reports will be often suggested by the paragraph headings, and teachers may sometimes find it advantageous, when time permits, to have reports made on writers and books mentioned in the Appendix but not in the text, as well as on topics treated more fully in my larger book, "A History of American Literature, 1607-1865" (1903, Appleton). Book Description
Excerpt from History of American Literature The following chapters describe the greatest achieve ments in American literature from the earliest times until the present. Many pupils fail to obtain a clear idea of great American authors and literary movements because textbook writers and teachers ignore the element of truth in the old adage, The half is greater than the whole, and dwell too much on minor authors and details, which could reasonably be expected to interest only a specialist. In the following pages especial attention has been paid, not only to the individual work of great authors, but also to literary movements, ideals, and animating principles, and to the relation of all these to English literature. Book Description
Excerpt from A Primer of American Literature The aim of the book is to be simple, orderly, and clear; to tell a few facts in such a way that there need be no confusion in the mind of the reader. While it is hoped that the subject-matter of the book has intrinsic value, a knowledge of literature obviously comes only from study of the literature itself; therefore, primarily the book will have its greatest usefulness when taken as a guide. With this thought in view, suggestions for reading, intended mainly for students in secondary schools, are given at the ends of the chapters. More mature minds will naturally read the books mentioned in the text. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Short History of American Literature Throughout the book the literature has been pre sented in its relation to general conditions in America and to the literatures of England and the Continent of Europe, for only so can it be completely understood and its full significance perceived 3 but the personality of the authors and the intrinsic qualities of their work have, it is hoped, received due attention. The division into periods is not meant to be insisted upon too strongly. But some dividing lines must be run for convenience and clearness in treating of so wide and diversified a field, and those adopted are perhaps liable to fewer objections than any others. They have, however, been transgressed freely where it was necessary to do so in order to avoid splitting the discussion of an author's work. In the case of writers with whom the reader is probably not familiar and never need be, the method is chie y descriptive 3 elsewhere the book is intended to be merely a guide in reading and studying the literature itself. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of American Literature Since 1870 It has been our object to determine this new period and to study its distinguishing characteristics. We have divided the literary history of the century into three periods, denominating them as the Knickerbocker Period, the New England Period, and the National Period, and we have made the last to begin shortly after the close of the Civil War with those new forces and new ideals and broadened views that grew out of that mighty struggle.
