Book Description
An Introduction to the Homily is not another "how to" book but a work that leads to a practical understanding of what the homily is and what it is supposed to do. Its purpose is to demonstrate how new homiletic scholarship from the various Christian churches, the insights found in normative church documents, contemporary theological, liturgical, and biblical studies, plus the lived experiences of preachers and people can help us understand the function of the homily in the liturgical tradition of the Roman Catholic Church. It is a source book for preachers and liturgical leaders who seek a firm foundation in liturgical preaching.

Book Description
Doing justice to the complexity of the preaching task and the questions that underlie it, Wilson organizes both the preparation and the content of the sermon around its "four pages." Each "page" addresses a different theological and creative component of what happens in any sermon. Page One presents the trouble or conflict that takes place in or that underscores the biblical text itself. Page Two looks at similar conflict--sin or brokenness--in our own time. Page Three returns to the Bible to identify where God is at work in or behind the text--in other words, to discover the good news. Page Four points to God at work in our world, particularly in relation to the situations described in Page Two.

Book Description
If you ask Pat Carroll how long it took to write this book he will respond "82 Years," a lifetime of reflection on scripture and life, blending together the stories of Jesus and the real-life questions and struggles we all face. A Jesuit priest for 33 years, Pat was a pastor, a teacher, a retreat director immersed in the lives of thousands of people and their search for meaning, for faith, for hope, for an increased ability to love. The past twenty years as a married man have added texture. His homilies are food for personal and/or group reflection. Each is part of Pat's life-long effort to "tell the story of Jesus, over and over, until we get it right!" Drawing on his extensive experience as a Jesuit priest, pastor and retreat leader, Patrick Carroll has now added to his published books this collection of homilies covering the full liturgical cycle. While the readings may be familiar, Carroll's treatment of them is unfailingly novel and imaginative, especially in the vivid ways he brings Jesus and His message into the world of today. This is a treasure of spiritual reading. (G. Donald Maloney teaches theology at Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH. ) As a Roman Catholic woman priest I have enjoyed reading Patrick Carroll's homilies and used parts of them in my own preaching. He brings the gospel into our everyday living situations. I look forward eagerly to having all three cycles bound together in one book. (Rev. Dr. Juanita Cordero RCWP, San Jose, CA.) I have been using Pat Carroll's homilies to help me with my own preaching for the past three years. Pat combines solid pastoral and biblical theology with wisdom born from experience with real people and an ability to find God working in many situations. I highly recommend his work both as a homiletic aid and for personal prayer. Book Description
The two Books of Homilies, along with the Book of Common Prayer and the Ordinal, have long been basic documents of the Church of England, and are valuable in showing how Anglican doctrine shifted during the Reformation, as well as being of considerable historical importance. The first book, published in 1547, early in the reign of Edward VI, was partly, though not entirely, the work of Archbishop Thomas Cranmer, and the inspiration appears to have been his. This was intended to raise the standards of preaching by offering model ser mons covering particular doctrinal and pastoral themes, either to be read (particularly by unlicensed clergy) or to provide preachers with additional material for their own sermons. The success of the venture led Bishop EdmundBonner, who had contributed to Cranmer's book, to produce his own Book of Homilies in 1555, during the reign of Queen Mary. The Second Book of Homilies, published in 1563 (and in a revised form in 1571) appears in turn to have been influenced by both Cranmer's and Bonner's books. The present edition brings together all three books, edited and introduced by Revd Dr Gerald Bray.

Book Description
Who did Jesus of Nazareth claim to be? What was his relationship with early Judaism? When and how did he expect the kingdom to come? What were his intentions? Though these key questions have been addressed in studies of the historical Jesus, Brant Pitre argues that they cannot be fully answered apart from a careful historical analysis of the Last Supper accounts. In this book Pitre offers a rigorous, up-to-date study of the historical Jesus and the Last Supper, filling a significant gap in current Jesus research. Situating the Last Supper in the triple contexts of ancient Judaism, the life of Jesus, and early Christianity, Pitre brings to light crucial insights into major issues driving the quest for Jesus. His Jesus and the Last Supper is sure to ignite discussion and debate.

Book Description
"Saint Leander, Archbishop of Seville describes the life of Leander, who brought the Catholic faith to Spain in the late sixth century and became a saint after his death in c. 600 AD. Despite inheriting great wealth and his sister's exposure to high society, Leander became a monk and persuaded his sister to give up wealth and opportunities for marriage in order to become a nun. Detailing how he persuaded her to join a convent and his celebration of his country's acceptance of the true faith, this book provides a new perspective on Leander's Byzantine parents and two brothers, Fulgentius and Isidore. When besieged by the Arian king, Liuvigild, Leander's parents and sister escaped to Carthage. Later in life, Leander taught Isidore to take over after him in Seville."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Description
The historical role of Photius has, all too often, been viewed only as it concerned the rift between the Western and Eastern Churches. He has been regarded either as the "Father of the Schism" or as the staunch defender of Greek Orthodoxy against the encroachments of Rome. It is hoped that by presenting the Homilies of Photius in English translation these one-sided views may to some extent be corrected. For, surprising though it may appear, we shall not find in the Homilies a single reference to the Papacy. When they are not purely didactic, the Homilies are dominated by such topics as the suppression of the Iconoclast movement, the re-establishment of sacred painting, the propagation of the true faith among heretics, and the quelling of internal division in the Church of Constantinople. -From the Introduction
