Excerpt from An Introduction to English Industrial History This book is an attempt to make a really interesting, simple and suggestive introduction to industrial and economic history. It is intended mainly to stimulate our young men and women of all classes to take up earnestly the study of this important subject, which has hitherto been beyond the reach of most young people because the only available text-books have been either out-of-date or far too learned and academic, as well as too expensive. The author's difficulty has been to know what to omit, but every effort has been made to include only the essential features and to present those in such a form as will tempt students to read the larger and more advanced books on the subject. A descriptive list of the most interesting books on the various portions of the subject will be found in the appendix. The sketch of a manor is, it is hoped, simple without being misleading. The two population maps are intended to illustrate clearly the growth of population in the eighteenth century. Thanks are due to Mr. J. The landed gentry of England happen for some centuries to have held the pre dominant power in the State and in society, and used it, not unnaturally, in many cases to further their own interests. Excerpt from English Industries of the Middle Ages: Being an Introduction to the Industrial History of Medieval England The rise of the capitalist and the monopolist, the social revolution of the Reformation, with the aboli tion of the monastic houses and the beginnings of the poor-law system constituted a' new era for the working classes even when unaccompanied by any startling change in methods or mechanical media. Moreover, from the middle of the sixteenth century documents and records relating to industrial matters become more numerous and more accessible, and this is therefore the usual starting-point for those who write upon these subjects. For these reasons my accounts of the various selected industries will be found to end at such dates within the sixteenth century as have seemed convenient, though I have not slavishly refrained from taking out of the seventeenth century occasional details applicable to the earlier period. Such, then, are the lines upon which I have built my book. If any critic considers that the subject should have been dealt with on another plan, he is at liberty to prove his contention by so treating it himself.
