The present study explores the Black student-athlete experience at Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs) and its potential impact on performance. There primary research question was twofold: (a) what is the academic, social, and athletic experience of Black student-athletes at PWIs (b) examine how their experiences may influence their athletic performance. Both male and female Black student-athletes (N= 4; N = 6) were recruited to participate in semi-structured interviews via Zoom. An interview guide and probing questions were used to examine the racial experiences of the participants in an academic, social, and athletic setting. Additionally, potential links to performance were explored through the interview guide. The interviews revealed four main themes: Microaggressions and Perceived Discrimination, Role Models and Social Support, Awareness of Identity, and Emotional Reaction and Management. Subthemes were also identified for each of the main themes. The findings of the study did not directly connect specific aspects of their experience to an improved or worsened performance. However, several of the themes presented by the participants have been seen to have an impact on performance in prior literature. These include belonging, team cohesion, support, amongst a variety of others. Coaches, athletic trainers, athletic departments, and professors should consider using these findings to inform their influence on Black student-athletes at PWIs. Future research is needed to explore the differences between the experiences of Black student-athletes participating in majority White sports at PWIs, as opposed to sports that heavily consist of other Black student-athletes. Most existing literature regarding African American student-athletes at Predominately White Institutions (PWIs) have examined their experiences by highlighting major deficiencies of this group's academic abilities. Most studies emphasize these students' lack of preparedness, low academic achievement, and high attrition rates (Harper 2005). As a result, little information is available regarding African American male student-athletes who actually excel, achieve at high levels academically, and accomplish goals in which their non-student athlete peers do not. Therefore, this book will serve as a platform for high-achieving African American male student-athletes, and will provide various experiences and perspectives-which have been silenced for the past few decades. Self-efficacy theory (Bandura, 1997) and Stereotype threat theory (Steele, 2003) will serve as the theoretical bases for this book. This research explored the major strains that Black male student-athletes experience while attending a Division I Power-Five conference institution and the coping strategies they use to mitigate the strains while being a student and an athlete. Many scholars contend that sports are as important as academics in the lives of students. This is especially true for minorities as many believe sports provide access to academic institutions that might normally be out of reach. As the NCAA now reports that Black student-athletes exceed their White counterparts in most revenue-generating Division-I sports, their graduation rates continue to lag behind. This research used a qualitative case study approach and The Bowman Role Strain and Adaptation Model (BRSAM) as the theoretical framework to explore the strains and coping mechanisms that impact Black male student-athlete persistence. This research identified "time" as the primary strain that is experienced by student-athletes. A lack of time subsequently creates additional strains, which included those related to academics, engagement, and meeting the expectations of their sport. The study also identified athletic student services, family support, religion and spirituality, self-motivation and resilience as coping strategies used by student-athletes to manage stress. This study has implications for increased collaboration between athletics and academics; improvement of campus-wide student counseling and advising; reducing regulations that add mental health pressures to the already unique challenges of the student-athlete experience; and improving persistence and degree attainment for Black male student-athletes.

This qualitative research explored the unique experiences of Black female student athletes. Specifically, Black female student athletes at Division I (D-I), Predominantly White Institutions, academic and athletic experiences were explored as factors that may contribute to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) graduation success rate (GSR). Participants for this study included Black female student athletes from different Division I schools on the east coast. Accounts of the findings include the collection, data analysis, and interpretations drawing from the lens of Black Feminist theory, Intersectionality, and Sensemaking. The findings indicate specifically that Black female student athletes do not have unique experiences in regards to academics and athletics. The themes that emerged from academics and athletes include: transitional experiences, life and career goals, relationships with teammates and coaches, and pressure to perform. These themes are all related to the first research question. In terms of race and gender, the findings reveal that Black female student athletes struggle with racial reality, support system, self-segregation, and gender bias. During the interview process, the participants added more in-depth responses to the research question regarding race and gender differences. Many gave examples of when they faced racial or gender discrimination. It is important to note that one of the participants is an international student. I included her international race perspective in the findings section too as her viewpoint can be seen as an outlier. This study's findings and implications have the potential to support and inspire Black female student athletes, inform higher education institutions and athletic programs, and the ways in which the graduation rate gap may be reduced and/or eliminated.
