Book Description
Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 22 (thesis year 1977) a total of 10,658 theses titles from 28 Canadian and 227 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 22 reports theses submitted in 1977, on occasion, certain universities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Description
For flow over a two-dimensional ramp compression corner case, an experimental investigation to determine the incipient separation was carried out at Mach numbers between 0.55 and 0.9 and Reynolds numbers (based on undisturbed boundary layer thickness) between 350,000 and 690,000. Detailed surface pressure, pitot traversing and oil flow data were obtained for each ramp angle case. Two-dimensionality of the ramp compression corners was verified by the surface oil flow. A major finding of this study is that the incipient separation ramp angle is relatively independent of Mach number and Reynolds number within the range studied. The incipient separation ramp angle was found to be about 22.5 degrees.

Book Description
Turbulent transport of momentum, heat and matter dominates many of the fluid flows found in physics, engineering and the environmental sciences. Complicated unsteady motions which mayor may not count as turbulence are found in interstellar dust clouds and in the larger blood vessels. The fascination of this nonlinear, irreversible stochastic process for pure scientists is demonstrated by the contributions made to its understanding by several of the most distinguished mathematical physicists of this century, and its importance to engineers is evident from the wide variety of industries which have contributed to, or benefit from, our current knowledge. Several books on turbulence have appeared in recent years. Taken collectively, they illustrate the depth of the subject, from basic principles accessible to undergraduates to elaborate mathematical solutions representing many years of work, but there is no one account which emphasizes its breadth. For this, a multi-author work is necessary. This book is an introduction to our state of knowledge of turbulence in most of the branches of science which have contributed to that knowledge. It is not a Markovian sequence of unrelated essays, and we have not simply assembled specialized accounts of turbulence problems in each branch; this book is a unified treatment, with the material classified according to phenomena rather than application, and freed as far as possible from discipline-oriented detail. The approach is "applied" rather than "pure" with the aim of helping people who need to under stand or predict turbulence in real life.

Book Description
The general purpose of this investigation was to study the separated flow field associated with a fin-body juncture. Specific objectives included: (a) determining the severity and extent of aerodynamic heating, (b) providing flow visualization results to illustrate the flow structure, and (c) obtaining a data base of heat-transfer and surface-pressure measurements upon which to develop future analytical relations to predict peak interference heating levels. Tests were conducted at Mach 5 over a unit Reynolds number range of 4.5 to 26 million per foot. A fin-cone model was used. The data consist of surface- pressure distributions, heat-transfer measurements using the phase-change paint technique, and schlieren and oil-flow photographs. Results are presented for several fin-cone geometries to include fin sweep and fin-cone gap. Where possible, comparisons are made with fin-flat-plate data.
