Book Description
A rectangular cross section channel, designed and built by R. McKee to create the laminar secondary Taylor-Goertler vortex flow, was modified to expand the experimental investigation of the vortex flow. The modification allowed the hot wire anemometer, used to obtain velocity profiles, to be moved in both the radial and transverse direction. This additional freedom permitted a rectangular cross section of the flow to be investigated. It was concluded that the onset of Taylor-Goertler vortices was in agreement with existing information, that the intensity of the vortices increased with increasing flow rate, and turbulent fluctuations grew within the vortex structure.

Book Description
A rectangular cross section channel, with both a straight and a curved portion, was designed and built to create the laminar secondary Taylor-Goertler vortex flow. An aerosol was used to visualize these flow patterns, and photographs of the results are presented. A hot wire anemometer investigation of one location in the curved section was conducted to obtain the mean velocity profiles and turbulence levels. The pressure drop along both the straight and the curved sections was measured and compared. A constant temperature wall heater was also designed and installed in the straight section of the channel. Approximate values of the heating losses were obtained and the overall and local heat transfer coefficients were calculated for the straight portion of the channel. It was concluded that the vortices develop with both velocity increases and distance along the channel, and that the increase in pressure drop due to the vortices varied from near zero to approximately 20% with increasing Reynolds numbers. Book Description
An experimental investigation was conducted to study convective heat transfer in straight and curved rectangular channels of high aspect ratio that approximate plates of infinite extent. Experiments were performed at steady state in the turbulent flow regime with one wall held at a constant heat flux and the opposite wall essentially adiabatic. The effect of curvature induced secondary flow on heat transfer on the concave and convex walls was observed by comparing Nusselt numbers for four different configurations at several different Reynolds numbers. Significant heat transfer enhancement was observed on the concave wall. Correlations for Nusselt number as a function of Reynolds number were calculated for the cases studied. Keywords: Taylor Gortler Vortices; Duct Flow; Channel Flow; Curved Rectangular Channel; Secondary Flow; Heat Transfer; Dean Number; Theses.

Book Description
Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis· seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) *at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac· tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 20 (thesis year 1975) a total of 10,374 theses titles from 28 Canadian and 239 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. The organization of Volume 20 is identical to that of past years. It consists of theses titles arranged by discipline and by university within each discipline.
