Book Description
Nucleate boiling was studied experimentally from electrically heated horizontal and vertical wires (0.0197-in. diam.) in water, ethyl alcohol, and 60-percent-by-weight aqueous sucrose solution in gravity fields of 0.014 and 1.0 times Earth gravity. The fluids were at their saturation temperatures at atmospheric pressure. The gravity reduction to 0.014 times Earth gravity caused a shift of only a few degrees in the curve of heat flux as a function of the difference between surface and saturation temperatures. Film boiling of ethyl alcohol was observed at Earth gravity and at several reduced gravity fields down to 0.014 times Earth gravity. For both the horizontal and vertical orientations, the gravity field and the circumferential surface tension at the interface of the vapor film surrounding the thin wire proved to be very important for the determination of the vapor removal pattern. As gravity was reduced, the vapor film behavior for the vertical orientation approached that for the horizontal position. A motion picture film is available that illustrates the boiling behavior in reduced gravity.

Book Description
Stable boiling in a rotating cylindrical annulus with continuous through-flow of water was obtained at heat fluxes as high as 818 000 Btu/(hr)(ft^2) (2. 58 MW/m^2) at atmospheric pressure. Incipient- and nucleate -boiling heat -transfer coefficients were obtained at accelerations up to 400 g's. Measurements were made of void fractions, radial temperature profiles, and wall pressures in the boiling fluid. Convective secondary-flow cells and fluid temperature inversions were revealed. Increased fluid thicknesses increased heat-transfer coefficients, but inlet liquid subcooling had no effect. Coefficients increased with acceleration at low heat fluxes, but at high fluxes varied less than the usual data scatter.

Book Description
A system was designed to investigate experimentally the mechanism of nucleate pool boiling heat transfer using commercial grade liquid nitrogen as a working fluid. A circular horizontal flat plate five square centimeters in area was utilized as a boiler surface. The effect of various surface parameters on the characteristic heat flux versus (Tw-Ts) curve at atmospheric conditions was determined. Surfaces used included a highly polished mirror surface, a mirror surface coated with oxide, a mirror surface coated with grease, a roughened surface, and a roughened surface coated with Teflon, all fabricated from commercial electrical tough pitch copper. The final surface used was a Nickel 200 highly polished mirror surface. The data from the copper surface with a mirror finish was in agreement with the data of previous investigations. The effects of roughness, contaminants, hysteresis, and boiler surface material were discussed. A comparison was made on incipient boiling heat fluxes. The results indicate that the surface conditions play a major role in nucleate pool boiling heat transfer to liquid nitrogen.
