Book Description
Shipboard Interior Communication (IC) systems, a critical part of command and control, have not kept pace with the technological advances occurring in other areas of Naval warfare. As a result, the requirements and demands place on an IC system in a warfare scenario are not likely to be met with much success. This thesis to takes the first steps towards rectifying this unsatisfactory situation. The general weaknesses and problems with present IC systems are identified. Then, paying close attention to the needs of surface combatants, particularly DDG-51 and FFG-7 class ships, the requirements and functions needed to improve shipboard IC are presented. These are incorporated into the requirements and functions needed to develop an ideal Integrated Shipboard Communication System (ISCS). A French designed and built ISCS is then compared to this ideal system in order to evaluate its potential for implementation aboard U.S. Navy surface combatants. (Author).

Book Description
Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thougtit that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 31 (thesis year 1986) a total of 11 ,480 theses titles trom 24 Canadian and 182 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base tor these titles reported will greatly enhance the value ot this important annual reterence work. While Volume 31 reports theses submitted in 1986, on occasion, certain univer sities do re port theses submitted in previousyears but not reported at the time.

Book Description
IVCS is the Navy's newest and most modern interior communications system. It is the Navy's only qualified integrated shipboard voice distribution system, and received approval for service use in 1978. It operates under processor control to provide the high degree of flexibility demanded to meet the varied missions of today's naval vessels. The production version of the first-generation system has been fully operational since 1975 and has produced favorable operational experience. System enhancements have been accomplished with an efficiency not previously seen in modifying interior communications systems. This ease of modification is a characteristic of the IVCS and its software control features, and will apply to all ships regardless of their type or mission. A modified first-generation system is in the AEGIS base line, and many exciting innovations are planned to meet the AEGIS mission. A second-generation system is being tested that increases the modularity, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness of the IVCS to enable fleet-wide application. The resulting system provides one common design for the 1980's.

Book Description
The candidate communications systems developed in the design phase of the Task V are costed and evaluated for effectiveness. Section 2.0 describes briefly the six primary candidates. Section 3.0 presents the life cycle cost computations for each candidate. Section 4.0 describes the determination of relative effectiveness of each candidate. Section 5.0 examines the cost-effectiveness of hardware and doctrine combinations which were not investigated in the main analysis. Section 6.0 highlights the major cost and effectiveness differences among the candidates. Section 7.0 refines the candidates to correct any design deficiencies. Section 8.0 contains the rationale used to select the most cost-effective system. Section 9.0 presents the conclusions reached regarding this system.
