A feasibility study was performed to evaluate the potential of multipurpose applications of moderate-temperature geothermal waters in the vicinity of the Baca Grande community development in the San Luis Valley, Colorado. The project resource assessment, based on a thorough review of existing data, indicates that a substantial resource likely exists in the Baca Grande region capable of supporting residential and light industrial activity. Engineering designs were developed for geothermal district heating systems for space heating and domestic hot water heating for residences, including a mobile home park, an existing motel, a greenhouse complex, and other small commercial uses such as aquaculture. In addition, a thorough institutional analysis of the study area was performed to highlight factors which might pose barriers to the ultimate commercial development of the resource. Finally, an environmental evaluation of the possible impacts of the proposed action was also performed. The feasibility evaluation indicates the economics of the residential areas are dependent on the continued rate of housing construction. If essentially complete development could occur over a 30-year period, the economics are favorable as compared to existing alternatives. For the commercial area, the economics are good as compared to existing conventional energy sources. This is especially true as related to proposed greenhouse operations. The institutional and environmental analyses indicates that no significant barriers to development are apparent.

To sustain the United States current affluence and strength, the U.S. Government has encouraged energy conservation through executive orders, federal and local laws, and consumer education. A substantial reduction in U.S. energy consumption could be realized by using geothermal heat pumps to heat and cool buildings throughout the U.S., though initial installation cost are a deterrent. This thesis uses Monte Carlo simulation to predict energy consumption, life cycle cost and payback period for the vertical closed-loop ground source heat pump (GSHP) relative to conventional heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems: air-source heat pumps (ASHP), air-cooled air conditioning with either natural gas, fuel oil, or liquid petroleum gas furnaces, or with electrical resistance heating. The Monte Carlo simulation is performed for a standard commercial office building within each of the 48 continental states. Regardless of the conventional HVAC system chosen, the simulation shows that for each state the GSHP has the highest probability of using less energy and having a lower operating and life cycle cost than conventional HVAC systems; however, initial installation cost are typically twice that of conventional HVAC systems and payback periods vary greatly depending on site conditions. The average 50th percentile GSHP payback period in the U.S. was 7.5 years compared against the ASHP and 9.2 years compared against the air-cooled air conditioning with natural gas furnace. However, these values vary greatly depending on location and are most sensitivity to ground thermal conductivity, utility prices, and HVAC efficiency ratings. Under the right conditions, payback for geothermal heat pumps can be much shorter and the model developed in this research can help predict energy savings and payback periods for a given site.

In this report the cost of using low temperature geothermal energy resources for direct heating applications is compared to the costs associated with conventional heating fuels. The projects compared all involved replacing conventional fuels (e.g., natural gas and fuel oils) with geothermal energy in existing heating systems. The cost of using geothermal energy in existing systems was also compared with the cost of new coal-fired equipment. The costs for the geothermal retrofit projects were estimated based on the results to date in five projects partially funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). These cost estimates are highly realistic since four of the five projects are operational and the other project is currently under construction. The five projects examined are: Diamond Ring Ranch, which uses geothermal water from a previously existing well to heat several small buildings and to dry grain on a private ranch in South Dakota. (Operational: 1979); Klamath YMCA, which uses geothermal energy to heat a swimming pool and to provide space and water heating to a YMCA Building in Klamath Falls, Oregon. (Operational: 1980); Pagosa Springs, Colorado, where the local government is developing a near-the-surface geothermal resource to provide district heating for at least 127 businesses, residences, and public facilities. (Operation planned: 1981); Philip, South Dakota, where a local government has developed a small district heating system to heat five school buildings and at least eight businesses. (Operational: 1980); St. Mary's Hospital, which provides space heating and hot water preheating to a hospital in South Dakota. (Operational: 1980).

The operating characteristics and economies of several representative space heating systems are analyzed. The analysis techniques used may be applied to a larger variety of systems than considered herein, thereby making this document more useful to the residential developer, heating and ventilating contractor, or homeowner considering geothermal space heating. These analyses are based on the use of geothermal water at temperatures as low as 120°F in forced air systems and 140°F in baseboard convection and radiant floor panel systems. This investigation indicates the baseboard convection system is likely to be the most economical type of geothermal space heating system when geothermal water of at least 140°F is available. Heat pumps utilizing water near 70°F, with negligible water costs, are economically feasible and they are particularly attractive when space cooling is included in system designs. Generally, procurement and installation costs for similar geothermal and conventional space heating systems are about equal, so geothermal space heating is cost competitive when the unit cost of geothermal energy is less than or equal to the unit cost of conventional energy. Guides are provided for estimating the unit cost of geothermal energy for cases where a geothermal resource is known to exist but has not been developed for use in residential space heating.
