An Anthology Of German Literature (Classic Reprint)
Author: Calvin Thomas
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780265412992
Category : Poetry
Languages : de
Pages : 410
Book Description
Excerpt from An Anthology Of German Literature This book is designed to accompany an introductory study of the history of German literature. It is assumed that the history itself will be learned, so far as necessary, either from lectures or from some other book devoted to the subject. As the selections were made, for the most part, while I was writing my own short history of German literature for the series published under the general editorship of Mr. Edmund Gosse and known as Literatures of the World, it was natural that the Anthology should take on, to some extent, the charac ter of a companion book to the History. At the same time I did not desire that either book should necessari involve the use of the other. Hence the absence of cross references; and hence also, in the Ah thology, the brief introductory notes, giving important dates and sum mary characterizations. These are meant to enable the student to read the selections intelligently without constant recourse to some other book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. The German-Jewish Dialogue
Author: Ritchie Robertson
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN: 9780192839107
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 436
Book Description
'I love the German character more than anything else in the world, and my breast is an archive of German song' So wrote Heinrich Heine in 1824, adding: 'It is likely that my Muse gave her German dress something of a foreign cut from annoyance with the German character'. Here Heine sums up the ambivalent emotions of Jews who felt at home in German culture and yet, even in the age of emancipation, foundGermany less than welcoming. This anthology illustrates the history of Jews in Germany from the eighteenth century, when it was first proposed to give Jews civil rights, to the 1990's and the problems of living after the Holocaust. The texts include short stories, plays, poems, essays, letters anddiary entries, all chosen for their literary merit as well as the light they shed on the relations between Jews in Germany and Austria and their Gentile fellow-citizens. Ritchie Robertson's lucid introduction provides the necessary historical context and his translations make available in Englishin some cases for the first time - both Jewish writers on various aspects of Jewish experience and responses of Gentile writers to the Jews in their midst. Each is introduced by a short illuminating preface.

The Drinker
Author: Hans Fallada
Publisher: Melville House
ISBN: 1612190650
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 284
Book Description
One of the great German writers of the 20th century draws from his own life to present a “brave, fearless, and honest” tale of one man’s dark descent into depression and alcoholism (The Sunday Times, London) This astonishing, autobiographical tour de force was written by Hans Fallada in an encrypted notebook while he was incarcerated in a Nazi insane asylum. Discovered after his death, it tells the tale—often fierce, often poignant, often extremely funny—of a small businessman losing control as he fights valiantly to blot out an increasingly oppressive society. In a brilliant translation by Charlotte and A.L. Lloyd, it is presented here with an afterword by John Willett that details the life and career of the once internationally acclaimed Hans Fallada, and his fate under the Nazis—which brings out the horror of the events behind the book.
