Book Description
Excerpt from An Alphabetical List of English Words Occurring in the Literature of the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries, Vol. 1: And Forming a Basis of Comparison for the Use of Contributors to the New Dictionary of the Philological Society; A to D One thing more remains to be mentioned. In the Prospectus, pp. 6, 8, it is announced that the' Basis for Comparison for this Third Period would consist of an index to Burke's entire works. It has, however, been found advisable to abandon this plan, and the list now issued has been formed by extracting for each letter a number of words large enough to serve as a foundation, from the writings of Dryden, Wordsworth, and Tennyson, and then adding to this substratum all, or nearly all the contributions for this Period already in the Editor's hands. The result in conse quence presents a somewhat Imeven and heterogeneous appearance; but to fill up all the interstices would have required some time, and would not have compensated us for the great disadvantages which would have arisen from a further postponement of publication. The Making of the Oxford English Dictionary
Author: Peter Gilliver
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0191009687
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 688
Book Description
This book tells the history of the Oxford English Dictionary from its beginnings in the middle of the nineteenth century to the present. The author, uniquely among historians of the OED, is also a practising lexicographer with nearly thirty years' experience of working on the Dictionary. He has drawn on a wide range of sources-including previously unexamined archival material and eyewitness testimony-to create a detailed history of the project. The book explores the cultural background from which the idea of a comprehensive historical dictionary of English emerged, the lengthy struggles to bring this concept to fruition, and the development of the book from the appearance of the first printed fascicle in 1884 to the launching of the Dictionary as an online database in 2000 and beyond. It also examines the evolution of the lexicographers' working methods, and provides much information about the people-many of them remarkable individuals-who have contributed to the project over the last century and a half.
