Neural Network Control of a Parallel Hybrid-electric Propulsion System for a Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicle
Author: Frederick G. Harmon
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 566
Book Description
Parallel hybrid-electric propulsion systems would be beneficial for small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) used for military, homeland security, and disaster monitoring missions involving intelligence, surveillance, or reconnaissance (ISR). The benefits include increased time-on-station and range than electric-powered UAVs and stealth modes not available with gasoline-powered UAVs. A conceptual design of a small UAV with a parallel hybrid-electric propulsion system, an optimization routine for the energy use, the application of a neural network to approximate the optimization results, and simulation results are provided. The two-point conceptual design includes an internal combustion engine sized for cruise and an electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack sized for endurance speed. The flexible optimization routine allows relative importance to be assigned between the use of gasoline, electricity, and recharging. The Cerebellar Model Arithmetic Computer (CMAC) neural network approximates the optimization results and is applied to the control of the parallel hybrid-electric propulsion system. The CMAC controller saves on the required memory compared to a large look-up table by two orders of magnitude. The energy use for the hybrid-electric UAV with the CMAC controller during a one-hour and a three-hour ISR mission is 58% and 27% less, respectively, than for a gasoline-powered UAV.

Intelligent Control of Connected Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles
Author: Amir Taghavipour
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3030003140
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 202
Book Description
Intelligent Control of Connected Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles presents the development of real-time intelligent control systems for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, which involves control-oriented modelling, controller design, and performance evaluation. The controllers outlined in the book take advantage of advances in vehicle communications technologies, such as global positioning systems, intelligent transportation systems, geographic information systems, and other on-board sensors, in order to provide look-ahead trip data. The book contains simple and efficient models and fast optimization algorithms for the devised controllers to address the challenge of real-time implementation in the design of complex control systems. Using the look-ahead trip information, the authors of the book propose intelligent optimal model-based control systems to minimize the total energy cost, for both grid-derived electricity and fuel. The multilayer intelligent control system proposed consists of trip planning, an ecological cruise controller, and a route-based energy management system. An algorithm that is designed to take advantage of previewed trip information to optimize battery depletion profiles is presented in the book. Different control strategies are compared and ways in which connecting vehicles via vehicle-to-vehicle communication can improve system performance are detailed. Intelligent Control of Connected Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles is a useful source of information for postgraduate students and researchers in academic institutions participating in automotive research activities. Engineers and designers working in research and development for automotive companies will also find this book of interest. Advances in Industrial Control reports and encourages the transfer of technology in control engineering. The rapid development of control technology has an impact on all areas of the control discipline. The series offers an opportunity for researchers to present an extended exposition of new work in all aspects of industrial control.

Fractional Order Motion Controls
Author:
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1118387716
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 470
Book Description
Covering fractional order theory, simulation and experiments, this book explains how fractional order modelling and fractional order controller design compares favourably with traditional velocity and position control systems. The authors systematically compare the two approaches using applied fractional calculus. Stability theory in fractional order controllers design is also analysed. Presents material suitable for a variety of real-world applications, including hard disk drives, vehicular controls, robot control and micropositioners in DNA microarray analysis Includes extensive experimental results from both lab bench level tests and industrial level, mass-production-ready implementations Covers detailed derivations and numerical simulations for each case Discusses feasible design specifications, ideal for practicing engineers The book also covers key topics including: fractional order disturbance cancellation and adaptive learning control studies for external disturbances; optimization approaches for nonlinear system control and design schemes with backlash and friction. Illustrations and experimental validations are included for each of the proposed control schemes to enable readers to develop a clear understanding of the approaches covered, and move on to apply them in real-world scenarios.

Hybrid Feedback Control
Author: Ricardo G. Sanfelice
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 0691189536
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 421
Book Description
A comprehensive introduction to hybrid control systems and design Hybrid control systems exhibit both discrete changes, or jumps, and continuous changes, or flow. An example of a hybrid control system is the automatic control of the temperature in a room: the temperature changes continuously, but the control algorithm toggles the heater on or off intermittently, triggering a discrete jump within the algorithm. Hybrid control systems feature widely across disciplines, including biology, computer science, and engineering, and examples range from the control of cellular responses to self-driving cars. Although classical control theory provides powerful tools for analyzing systems that exhibit either flow or jumps, it is ill-equipped to handle hybrid control systems. In Hybrid Feedback Control, Ricardo Sanfelice presents a self-contained introduction to hybrid control systems and develops new tools for their analysis and design. Hybrid behavior can occur in one or more subsystems of a feedback system, and Sanfelice offers a unified control theory framework, filling an important gap in the control theory literature. In addition to the theoretical framework, he includes a plethora of examples and exercises, a Matlab toolbox (as well as two open-source versions), and an insightful overview at the beginning of each chapter. Relevant to dynamical systems theory, applied mathematics, and computer science, Hybrid Feedback Control will be useful to students and researchers working on hybrid systems, cyber-physical systems, control, and automation.
