La dermatite atopique et l'allergie alimentaire sont deux pathologies étroitement liées chez le nourrisson et le jeune enfant, la première étant fréquemment la conséquence de l'autre. L'allergie alimentaire est un problème familial, héréditaire, mais qui peut être favorisée par le phénotype Th2 intra-utérin, celui-là même qui prédomine chez les allergiques. Les allergies les plus communément retrouvées chez le nourrisson et le jeune enfant qui développent une dermatite atopique sont les allergies aux œufs, aux protéines de lait de vache, au blé ou encore à la moutarde. La définition de la dermatite atopique, sa symptomatologie, son diagnostic différentiel dans l'allergie alimentaire et son traitement de base sont présentés. La question de l'éviction primaire des allergènes alimentaires les plus répandus par la femme enceinte et qui allaite est posée. L'allaitement maternel a un effet plus protecteur que délétère sur la dermatite atopique ainsi que sur la flore intestinale du nouveau-né qui joue un rôle déterminant dans l'induction de la tolérance aux allergènes. Quant à la diversification alimentaire, elle doit être progressive et ne doit pas être débutée avant les six mois de l'enfant. L'éviction de l' allergène incriminé doit être stricte aussi bien à la maison qu'en collectivité et doit être aidée en cela par la nouvelle loi sur l'étiquetage industriel des denrées alimentaires applicable le 25 novembre 2005. Le pharmacien, acteur de santé publique, a dorénavant un conseil plus efficace quant à la prévention, le diagnostic et le traitement à proposer aux parents au quotidien.
