Book Description
Sports films are popular forms of entertainment around the world, but beyond simply amusing audiences, they also reveal much about class, race, gender, sexuality, and national identity. In All-Stars and Movie Stars, Ron Briley, Michael K. Schoenecke, and Deborah A. Carmichael explore the interplay between sports films and critical aspects of our culture, examining them as both historical artifacts and building blocks of ideologies, values, and stereotypes. The book covers not only Hollywood hits such as Field of Dreams and Miracle but also documentaries such as The Journey of the African American Athlete and international cinema, such as the German film The Miracle of Bern. The book also explores television coverage of sports, commenting on the relationship of media to golf and offering a new perspective on the culture and politics behind the depictions of the world's most popular pastimes. The first part of the book addresses how sports films represent the cultural events, patterns, and movements of the times in which they were set, as well as the effect of the media and athletic industry on the athletes themselves. Latham Hunter examines how the baseball classic The Natural reflects traditional ideas about gender, heroism, and nation, and Harper Cossar addresses how the production methods used in televised golf affect viewers. The second section deals with issues such as the growth of women's involvement in athletics, sexual preference in the sports world, and the ever-present question of race by looking at sports classics such as Rocky, Hoosiers, and A League of Their Own. Finally, the authors address the historical and present-day role sports play in the international and political arena by examining such films as Visions of Eight and The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner. This important and unique collection illuminates the prominent role that sports play in society and how that role is reflected in film. Analysis of the depiction of sports in film and television provides a deeper understanding of the appeal that sports hold for people worldwide and of the forces behind the historic and cultural traditions linked to sports.

Book Description
Today’s Latinx motion pictures are built on the struggles—and victories—of prior decades. Earlier filmmakers threw open doors and cleared new paths for those of the twenty-first century to willfully reconstruct Latinx epics as well as the daily tragedies and triumphs of Latinx lives. Twenty-first-century Latinx film offers much to celebrate, but as noted pop culture critic Frederick Luis Aldama writes, there’s still room to be purposefully critical. In Latinx Ciné in the Twenty-First Century contributors offer groundbreaking scholarship that does both, bringing together a comprehensive presentation of contemporary film and filmmakers from all corners of Latinx culture. The book’s seven sections cover production techniques and evolving genres, profile those behind and in front of the camera, and explore the distribution and consumption of contemporary Latinx films. Chapters delve into issues that are timely, relevant, and influential, including representation or the lack thereof, identity and stereotypes, hybridity, immigration and detention, historical recuperation, and historical amnesia. With its capacious range and depth of vision, this timeless volume of cutting-edge scholarship blazes new paths in understanding the full complexities of twenty-first century Latinx filmmaking. Book Description
Can you name ten actors who played women or ten actresses who played prostitutes in the movies? What about anyone who gained weight or got into shape for a movie role? And, there are those who fell in love on a movie set, performed together, and were paid big bucks for a divorce. The answers are in this book, although you might have a preference for someone I didn’t recognize. You might even learn something new about the movies or your favorite stars. Did you know that television’s Police Squad! ran for only six episodes, but it led to three movies. Do you remember when Paul Newman played himself on The Simpsons? The idea for the book was based on a childhood pastime similar to hopscotch, but without the hopping or standing on one leg. This book is sure to bring hours of entertainment. There are over 1000 entries, organized into ten chapters with ten sections each. Sit down, keep reading, and enjoy!

Book Description
Marki Queen is Hollywood royalty in desperate need of a knight in shining armour. Preferably one with a real horse who gives riding lessons. Thanks to her childhood television role, the whole world thinks she’s an expert horsewoman. Nobody knows it was all an act. Now she has two weeks to learn to ride for real, and a small-town cowboy is her only hope. Clay Lawson is not pleased that he got roped into giving riding lessons on top of all his other duties as the Royal Oak Ranch’s general manager. He was told that all Marki Queen needed was a refresher course, but when he discovers she’s been a fake cowgirl for her whole life, everything changes. The more time they spend together, the harder they fall. But is two weeks long enough to start a romance that can bridge the country-Hollywood divide?
