Water Management in Megacities
Author: Cecilia Tortajada
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 131799731X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 281
Book Description
Efficient and equitable water, wastewater and stormwater management for the megacities is becoming an increasingly complex task. The special issue will focus on water management in its totality for megacities, including their technical, social, economic, legal, institutional and environmental dimensions through a series of specially invited case studies from different megacities of the world. At present, around one out of two of the earth’s 6.3 billion people live in urban areas. Each year, the world population grows by around 80 millions. Practically all of this growth is urban, primarily due to migration. World’s urban population is expected to reach 5 billion by 2030, which is nearly 2/3rd more than in 2000, and would mean that 60% of world’s population will live in urban areas. The case studies analysed include some of the most interesting and challenging megacities of this planet, Dhaka, Istanbul, Jakarta, Johannesburg, México City, Riyadh and São Paulo. They assess different aspects of how water is intermingled in the overall development milleau. The special issue will considers the magnitudes, nature and extent of the present and future challenges and how these could be meet in socially acceptable and cost-effective ways. The contributors are all acknowledged water experts from different parts of the world. This book was previously published as a special issue of the International Journal of Water Resource s Development.

A Microbiological Survey in Lake Erie Near Cleveland, Ohio
Author: Ralph P. Collins
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Water
Languages : en
Pages : 52
Book Description
Periodic taste and odor at the Cleveland, Ohio Crown Water Treatment Plant prompted investigation of the role microorganisms play in the problem. Fungi, bacteria, and algae collected near the plant intake were studied during June through August 1971. During the three months of sampling, no vertical distribution pattern was noted in quantitative analysis of the phytoplankton. A number of algae, reported to induce taste and odor in water, were identified. Whatever the source of these odors, they were not due to benthic or periphyton algae, but could have been associated with the phytoplankton community as the reported 'Lake Erie odor' coincided with phytoplankton increase.

The Trophic Spectrum Revisited
Author: Colin S. Reynolds
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401734887
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 172
Book Description
These proceedings of a workshop of the International Association for Phytoplankton Taxonomy and Ecology are directed specifically at the relationship between phytoplankton ecology and the trophic status of water bodies. Contributions address the fact that distinctive assemblages of phytoplankton species are closely associated with particular categories of water bodies. Particular attention is paid to how communities are assembled and to the ways in which environmental constraints filter the successful species. Overview articles are included. The book will be a valuable source of information to limnologists, algologists, and the technical staff of all water suppliers.

Chemical Water and Wastewater Treatment VIII
Author: Hermann H. Hahn
Publisher: IWA Publishing
ISBN: 184339068X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 413
Book Description
In the wake of the Millennium Declaration and the Johannesburg resolutions, many countries have begun to address or re-write their policies regarding water supply and wastewater disposal. The goal is to provide high-quality drinking-water for more people and to safely dispose of spent waters from a large portion of the population than today. This book, as its predecessors, provides information and technical solutions to accomplish this mammoth task. It is the outcome of collective experience and know-how exchanged between experts in the field of water technology from all over the world: from the Americas, from central and southern Africa, from Europe and from different parts of Asia. The Chemical Water and Wastewater Treatment Series provides authoritative coverage of the key current developments in the chemical treatment of water and wastewater in theory or practice and related problems such as sludge production and properties, and the reuse of chemicals and chemically-treated waters and sludges. Chemical Water and Wastewater Treatment VIII is a valuable resource for managers, scientists, plant operators and others interested in chemical water and wastewater treatment technology.
