Book Description
Tasabbahuu bilkiraami wain lam takuunuu mitsalahum, fainnaa alttasabbaha bihim falahun "Be like them. Even if you cannot be exactly like them. Indeed, endeavouring to resemble the noble ones is the key to good fortune." Among the things that motivate us to have high aspirations and great determination is to look at the biographies and histories of the salaf al-shalih scholars. They were perfect examples of knowledge and 'amal. When a seeker of knowledge sees his humbleness, his lack of deeds, then sees how great the deeds and knowledge of the scholars are, he will be motivated to follow their customs, and will be encouraged to resemble their deeds and characteristics. ** Abu Yaqub al-Buwayti, a successor of Muhammad Ibn Idris al-Shafi'i, made an important contribution to the formation of the Shafi'i school of law. He reconstructs the interpretation of al-Shafi'i thought in his Mukhtashar. This book is a modest attempt to present the biography and works of one of the most important scholars of the Shafi'i school of thought. In this second edition, we have expanded in more detail with two Arabic papers for the Master's programme discussing al-Buwayti and his Mukhtashar, and a book and articles by Ahmed El Shamsy such as The Canonization of Islamic Law: A Social and Intellectual History (2013), The First Shāfiʿī: The Traditionalist Legal Thought of Abū Yaʿqūb al-Buwayṭī (2007), Rethinking 'Taqlīd' in the Early Shāfiʿī School (2008). I would like to extend my sincerest apologies for any errors in the letter and my English. I am simply an individual engaged in the pursuit of enhancing my abilities in the realm of da'wah, with the intention of providing assistance to fellow Muslims. I would be most grateful if you could support my work by sharing or purchasing my book. Your kind consideration would be greatly appreciated. ** Content of Book ACKNOWLEDGMENTS PREFACE HIS NAME FROM MALIKI TO SHAFI’I THE SCHOLARS’ PRAISE FOR HIM THE FIRST SHAFI’I CREATEDNESS OF THE QURAN MUKHTASHAR AL-BUWAYTI FORMATION OF SHAFI’ISM TERMINOLOGY OF THE SHAFI’I SCHOOL BIBLIOGRAPHY ABOUT THE AUTHOR Jumal Ahmad/ Islamic Character Development

The Life of Ibn Ḥanbal
Author: Abū al-Faraj ʻAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʻAlī Ibn al-Jawzī
Publisher: NYU Press
ISBN: 1479805300
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 471
Book Description
"Ahmad ibn Hanbal (d. 241 H/855 AD), renowned for his profound knowledge of hadiths—the reports of the Prophet’s sayings and deeds—is a major figure in the history of Islam. He was famous for living according to his own strict interpretation of the Prophetic model and for denying himself the most basic comforts, even though his family was prominent and his city, Baghdad, was then one of the wealthiest in the world. Ibn Hanbal’s piety and austerity made him a folk hero, especially after he resisted the attempts of two caliphs to force him to accept rationalist doctrine. His subsequent imprisonment and flogging is one of the most dramatic episodes of medieval Islamic history, and his principled resistance influenced the course of Islamic law, the rise of Sunnism, and the legislative authority of the caliphate. [This book] is a translation of the biography of Ibn Hanbal by the Baghdad preacher, scholar, and storyteller Ibn al-Jawzi (d. 597 H/1200 AD), newly abridged for a paperback readership by translator Michael Cooperson. Set against the background of fierce debates over the role of reason and the basis of legitimate government, it tells the formidable life tale of one of the most influential Muslims in history."--

Authority, Conflict, and the Transmission of Diversity in Medieval Islamic Law
Author: Kevin Jaques
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9047408470
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 327
Book Description
This book looks at Ṭabaqāt al-fuqahāʾ al-shāfiʿīyah by Ibn Qāḍī Shuhbah (d. 851/1448) and how its author attempted to portray the development of the Shāfiʿī school of law up to his own times. The volume examines the impact of crises on the formation of the ṭabaqāt genre. It demonstrates how ṭabaqāt, dedicated to explicating religious authority, were used by authors to sort-out challenges to intellectual orthodoxies. It also examines in detail the Ṭabaqāt directly, demonstrating Ibn Qāḍī Shuhbah’s depiction of the development of Shāfiʿī law, the formation of intellectual sub-schools within the madhhab, the causes of legal decline, and curatives for the decline that are to be found in the great Shāfiʿī Ikhtilāf (divergent opinion) texts: the ʿAzīz sharḥ al-wajīz by al-Rāfiʿī and the Rawḍāt al-ṭālibīn by al-Nawawī.
