Earth Science and Applications from Space
Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309257026
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 124
Book Description
Understanding the effects of natural and human-induced changes on the global environment and their implications requires a foundation of integrated observations of land, sea, air and space, on which to build credible information products, forecast models, and other tools for making informed decisions. The 2007 National Research Council report on decadal survey called for a renewal of the national commitment to a program of Earth observations in which attention to securing practical benefits for humankind plays an equal role with the quest to acquire new knowledge about the Earth system. NASA responded favorably and aggressively to this survey, embracing its overall recommendations for Earth observations, missions, technology investments, and priorities for the underlying science. As a result, the science and applications communities have made significant progress over the past 5 years. However, the Committee on Assessment of NASA's Earth Science Program found that the survey vision is being realized at a far slower pace than was recommended, principally because the required budget was not achieved. Exacerbating the budget shortfalls, NASA Earth science programs experienced launch failures and delays and the cost of implementing missions increased substantially as a result of changes in mission scope, increases in launch vehicle costs and/or the lack of availability of a medium-class launch vehicle, under-estimation of costs by the decadal survey, and unfunded programmatic changes that were required by Congress and the Office of Management and Budget. In addition, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has made significant reductions in scope to its future Earth environmental observing satellites as it contends with budget shortfalls. Earth Science and Applications from Space: A Midterm Assessment of NASA's Implementation of the Decadal Survey recommends a number of steps to better manage existing programs and to implement future programs that will be recommended by the next decadal survey. The report also highlights the urgent need for the Executive Branch to develop and implement an overarching multiagency national strategy for Earth observations from space, a key recommendation of the 2007 decadal survey that remains unfulfilled.

Observation of the Earth System from Space

Book Description
In the recent years, space-based observation methods have led to a subst- tially improved understanding of Earth system. Geodesy and geophysics are contributing to this development by measuring the temporal and spatial va- ations of the Earth’s shape, gravity ?eld, and magnetic ?eld, as well as at- sphere density. In the frame of the GermanR&D programmeGEOTECHNO- LOGIEN,researchprojectshavebeen launchedin2002relatedto the satellite missions CHAMP, GRACE and ESA’s planned mission GOCE, to comp- mentary terrestrial and airborne sensor systems and to consistent and stable high-precision global reference systems for satellite and other techniques. In the initial 3-year phase of the research programme (2002-2004), new gravity ?eld models have been computed from CHAMP and GRACE data which outperform previous models in accuracy by up to two orders of m- nitude for the long and medium wavelengths. A special highlight is the - termination of seasonal gravity variations caused by changes in continental water masses. For GOCE, to be launched in 2006, new gravity ?eld analysis methods are under development and integrated into the ESA processing s- tem. 200,000 GPS radio occultation pro?les, observed by CHAMP, have been processed on an operational basis. They represent new and excellent inf- mation on atmospheric refractivity, temperature and water vapor. These new developments require geodetic space techniques (such as VLBI, SLR, LLR, GPS) to be combined and synchronized as if being one global instrument.

Merciless. Relentless. Unstoppable. The first intelligent species to encounter mankind attacked without warning. Merciless. Relentless. Unstoppable. With little hope of halting the invasion, Earth's last roll of the dice was to dispatch three colony ships, seeds of Earth, to different parts of the galaxy. The human race would live on . . . somewhere. 150 years later, the planet Darien hosts a thriving human settlement, which enjoys a peaceful relationship with an indigenous race, the scholarly Uvovo. But there are secrets buried on Darien's forest moon. Secrets that go back to an apocalyptic battle fought between ancient races at the dawn of galactic civilization. Unknown to its colonists, Darien is about to become the focus of an intergalactic power struggle where the true stakes are beyond their comprehension. And what choices will the Uvovo make when their true nature is revealed and the skies grow dark with the enemy?

As a missionary pilot in several South American countries, Forrest Zander replays the joys, sorrows, and unique challenges of aviation in the Amazon jungle. His stories warm the heart and build conviction. Read with caution—for God may use it to challenge you to invest your life in the unmet need of this lost world.”J. Paul Nyquist, Ph.D., President, Moody Bible Institute“…you are meeting the real Forrey in this book, fun loving, yet serious about his life with Jesus and with an infectious love for God, His Word and the people God brings into his life, wherever they are! This fast moving book will both reassure and challenge you in your walk with God.”Martin Huyett, Executive Director, Aramaic Bible Translation“His Faithfulness Reaches to the Skies is a significant read. You will laugh at times and weep at times. Throughout, you will see God's faithfulness to the Zanders as well as their faithfulness to God's call upon their lives. His thrilling stories will inspire readers to put their own gifts and interests to use in fulfilling the Great Commission.”Bob Creson, President/CEO, Wycliffe USA“A penetrating examination of a critical sphere of Christian mission by one of its most illustrious practitioners. This book will provide you with vision and practical tools for strengthening your own mission in the world.”Rev. Dr. Daniel D. Meyer “Forrest Zander writes as he has lived—passionately for Jesus Christ. What a book, what an adventure, what a life, what a Savior!!! His Faithfulness Reaches to the Skies is a captivating account of God's redemptive work in and through a man, a couple, a family and a mission agency sold out to the Lord and His kingdom purposes.… How reassuring to read of God's sovereignty and compassion in all areas of life, even in the tragic loss of a child and spouse. The goodness of God continues to be evident by bringing Wanda into Forrest's life to enable them to serve the Lord together. It's a great read.”Pastor Paul Jorden, Bethel Community Church“I have read many books in my time—more than I care to remember—but none quite like this. Here is a book that tells a story, a story with honesty and grace, about the life well lived. A life lived for Christ as a missionary pilot. If you love missions, you will love this book. And in it you will find the secret of that life well lived: give it all to Jesus.”Josh Moody, Senior Pastor, College Church in Wheaton
