Kirby Nickel loves basketball. The only problem is he can't play basketball. But when an opportunity to meet NBA star Brett McGrew comes up, Kirby knows he has to take a chance and try out for the basketball team. Getting on the team turns out to be easy—the rest of the boys are as supremely untalented as Kirby—but winning in order to be eligible to meet McGrew is a whole different problem. Different and embarrassing. The coach's radical new plan for success involves the boys playing in their underwear. But if this crazy idea works, Kirby will get to meet his hero—who he secretly also hopes is his long-lost father.

Air Ball
Author: John R. Gerdy
Publisher: Univ. Press of Mississippi
ISBN: 1604730749
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 279
Book Description
John R. Gerdy has seen nearly every side of athletics. He is the son of a high school football coach; he was an All-American and professional basketball player and a legislative assistant for the National Collegiate Athletic Association; and he served as an associate commissioner for the Southeastern Conference. In Air Ball: American Education's Failed Experiment with Elite Athletics, Gerdy brings all of those perspectives to argue that the American system of school and community athletics is broken. But he is no mere naysayer. He offers a bold, progressive blueprint for reforming athletics to meet our country's educational and public health needs. Given higher education's historic role of providing leadership in our society, the initiative to restore a more sensible balance between athletics and education must begin with the reform of big-time college athletics. Despite widespread public skepticism regarding higher education's ability to change the system, Gerdy argues that the opportunity for reform has never been better. Using a provocative mix of research and thoughtful observation, he argues that, for the first time in the history of American higher education, the critical mass of people, organizations, and outside pressures necessary to drive and sustain progressive, systemic reform of the college athletic enterprise are in place.

Introduction to Understandable Physics
Author: Will Winn
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1449075770
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 311
Book Description
Will Winn has written {Introduction to Understandable Physics} with the goal of presenting physics concepts in a building-block fashion. In {Volume II} mathematical tools covered in {Volume I} are summarized in an Appendix, as a reference for learning the physics. As {Volume II} builds on the {Mechanics} of {Volume I}, it is expected that the student will have mastered the material of this earlier volume. The present volume begins with a historical review of how the atomic nature of matter was discovered. Then this background is applied in the study of solids, liquids, and gases. Next the kinetic nature of gases is extended to examine heat and temperature concepts for the above states of matter. Following a study of heat transfer modes (conduction, convection, and radiation), thermodynamics is introduced to examine heat engines and the concept of entropy. Next a study of the general nature of waves is appropriate, since a number of wave speeds had already been developed in the preceding examination of mechanics, matter and heat. Finally, these wave concepts are applied to a study of sound, including human response and the nature of music. Near the end of each chapter a [Simple Projects] section suggests experiments and/or field trips that may serve to reinforce the physics covered. Some of the experiments are simple enough for students to explore alone, while others benefit from equipment available to physics instructors. When opportune, the text develops relations that are revisited much later in the text. For example, both Chapters 16 and 17 develop the Stefan-Boltzmann radiation law, which is shown to be consistent with the Planck radiation law based on quantum concepts, in {Volume IV} Chapter 29. Also {optional} text sections provide students with a deeper appreciation of the subject matter; however they are not required for continuity. Some of these optional topics can be candidates for term projects.
