Book Description
International challenges in agricultural economics for the nineties will come from a redirection of the EC policy, stimulated by GATT negotiations, the opening towards Eastern Europe and environmental considerations, from a production oriented policy towards rural policy, aiming at protecting vulnerable regions, maintaining a rural population, curtailing production in the West and fostering it in the East, and aiming at the provision of environmentally desirable output. This book focusses on developments that are bound to dominate the discussion of agricultural economics and policy in the years to come. Together, the contributions give a vivid picture of the dynamic times that lie ahead for both Eastern and Western European agriculture, and of the profound changes that will be forced upon agricultural policy.

Book Description
Ulrich Koester researches and teaches at the Institute for Agricultural Economics at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel, Germany. He has been a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forestry for over 20 years. Moreover, he gained experience working with the International Food Policy Research Institute in Washington D.C. and with numerous international organizations, including the World Bank, FAO, the European Commission, the European Parliament and the European Court of Auditors. His teaching experience is based on courses taught at more than ten universities in general economics and agricultural economics. Part I of the book lays the theoretical foundations for understanding price formation in product and factor markets. In addition to neoclassical theory, institutional economics is of particular importance. Part II presents and evaluates agricultural policy with special reference to the EU, whereby the evaluation framework goes beyond the usual welfare theory analysis. The book is also a valuable aid for students of economic policy, especially because of its detailed evaluation of individual agricultural market policy instruments. The book is aimed at students at universities, technical colleges as well as politicians interested in rational agricultural policy making.

Book Description
Agriculture has always attracted attention from governments, policy makers and planners. As a globalized industry any policy that has agriculture at its core must also be globalized. This book examines the policy and planning of agriculture, in the wake of the global crisis in capitalism, using this framework to examine the regulatory processes that intersect with agriculture while giving analytical emphasis to the capitalist accumulation process and the institutions of social regulation. Its three main obejectives are: to outline a theoretical framework and approach for analysing developmnents in capitalist agriculture in advanced industrial economices; the explore policy and planning issues and problems emanating from agriculture at the end of the twentieth century; and to review policy and planning processes and practice appropriate to the new structural conditions facing agriculture. The book concludes with an overview of policy and planning processes and addresses the political choices that are revealed as being required

Book Description
Discusses ways in which the role of the state in promoting agricultural growth and development may be redefined. This report presents the proceedings of the 14th World Bank Agricultural Symposium held in January 1994. The papers explore ways in which the role of the state in promoting agricultural growth and development may be redefined. They also capitalize on important lessons emerging from experiences around the world. The report suggests that changing the role of government from market domination towards the provision of a regulatory framework that facilitates private sector activity is an ongoing process rather than a one-time occurrence. The papers also illustrate the wide variety of issues and the different approaches in the various countries that are redefining the role of government in agricultural development.
