The present study used data collected in a study funded by the CDC to explore whether self-control operates as a mediator between adverse childhood experiences (ACE) and TDV perpetration. The survey was distributed to random samples of 6th and 9th graders from 14 public schools in Michigan (N = 1236). Preliminary correlation tests revealed a strong negative relationship between self-control and TDV perpetration as well as a positive relationship between ACE and TDV perpetration. Hayes' (2012) PROCESS macro was used to establish mediation, and all components of self-control except for physical activity were found to partially mediate the effects of ACE on physical TDV perpetration.

There is an increasing appreciation of the interconnections among all forms of violence. These interconnections have critical implications for conducting research that can produce valid conclusions about the causes and consequences of abuse, maltreatment, and trauma. The accumulated data on co-occurrence also provide strong evidence that prevention and intervention should be organized around the full context of individuals’ experiences, not narrowly defined subtypes of violence. Managing the flood of new research and practice innovations is a challenge, however. New means of communication and integration are needed to meet this challenge, and the Web of Violence is intended to contribute to this process by serving as a concise overview of the conceptual and empirical work that form a basis for understanding the interconnections across forms of violence throughout the lifespan. It also offers ideas and directions for prevention, intervention, and public policy. A number of initiatives are emerging to integrate the findings on co-occurrence into research and action. The American Psychological Association established a new journal, Psychology of Violence, which is a forum for research on all types of violence. Sherry Hamby is the founding editor and John Grych is associate editor and co-editor of a special issue on the co-occurrence of violence in 2012. Dr. Hamby also is a co-investigator of the National Survey of Children’s Exposure to Violence (NatSCEV), which has drawn attention to polyvictimization. Polyvictimization is a focus of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Defending Childhood Initiative and has recently been featured in calls for grant proposals by the Office of Victims of Crime and National Institutes for Justice.

Teen relationship violence (TRV) is defined as physical, sexual, or psychological/emotional abuse within a relationship. There are many risk factors that can lead to the perpetration of TRV; one of these is childhood sexual abuse (CSA). CSA is defined as any interaction between a child and an adult (or another child) in which the child is used for sexual stimulation of the perpetrator or an observer. Past research has provided evidence that CSA is a significant predictor of TRV, however, the mechanisms underlying this relationship are not well understood. One possible explanation accounting for this relationship may employ the construct of shame. Shame as a personal trait is defined by the characterization that the self is fundamentally bad. It is a global experience in that the self is the problem, not the object or event that may have triggered these feelings. Past research has provided evidence for the "shame-rage spiral" theory in which shame can produce feelings that result in aggression and defensiveness in order for the individual to regain feelings of self-worth and control. Therefore, a related pathway that may help explain the relationship between CSA and TRV is through the inability to control one's anger, termed anger control. The current study assessed inner-city high school adolescents in San Diego County. The sample consisted of a total of 153 students including 131 female students and 22 male students. Mediation was analyzed by testing four regressions and each indirect effect of shame and anger control in the relationship between CSA and the perpetration of TRV. Although there were no specific hypotheses about victimization, the same models were tested using dating violence victimization in place of dating violence perpetration as exploratory analyses. There was partial support for the hypotheses tested. CSA significantly predicated shame and shame significantly predicted the perpetration of TRV. Lastly, the final regression indicated that shame is a partial mediator between CSA and perpetration of TRV. The same pattern held for the exploration of dating violence victimization. Namely, regressions revealed a relationship between CSA and the victimization of TRV as well as the relationship between shame and the victimization of TRV. Sobel tests of the indirect effect further provided support for presence of shame as a partial mediator of the relationship between CSA and dating violence. Regression analyses did not provide support for anger control as a mediator between CSA and TRV. An alternative statistical technique (structural equation modeling) was also used to test the shame and anger control mediation models. However, none of the models fit well according to the model fit indices, but the results of the SEM analyses are inconclusive due to low statistical power for this type of analysis. This study provided further evidence for the main effect from past literature of a strong relationship between CSA and the perpetration and victimization of TRV, and additionally, provided some support for the hypothesis that shame helps to explain a significant portion of both these relationships. This study provides new insight into how shame results from CSA and can lead to maladaptive behaviors, such as perpetration or revictimization in adolescent relationships, that should be explored further in future studies.
