Excerpt from Adventures of Exploration, Vol. 4: Africa The purpose of these Supplementary Readers is to quicken interest in Geography by stories of adventurous travel. They are not intended to serve as a history of exploration, but it is hoped that they will afford an idea of some Of the main steps by which knowledge has been gained, first of the World as a Whole, and then of the separate continents outside Europe. In the present volume an attempt has been made to indicate the pronunciation of difficult names. This cannot be done fully without an elaborate system of diacritical marks, and even then the task bristles with problems. In July 1903 Leonidas Hubbard set out to explore the uncharted interior of Labrador by canoe, accompanied by Dillon Wallace, his best friend, and George Elson, a Métis guide.
