Pages : 181
Book Description
This Research Topic is Volume II of a series. The previous volume can be found here: Advances in Development and Utilization of Underground Space To better adapt to the continuous development of modern society, the three-dimensional space should be fully utilized. Underground space is one of the most critical directions for expansion, due to the following advantages: (1) it is conducive to alleviating the shortage of construction land; (2) it helps relieve traffic congestion and improve environmental quality; (3) it is beneficial to the construction of air defense systems; and (4) it facilitates reducing energy consumption. The development and utilization of underground space is the cornerstone of underground engineering and tunnel engineering (UETE), in which surrounding rocks play an essential role. Extant studies have manifested what impacts of surrounding rocks on the (safety) construction of UETE. Yet less is known about mechanical evolution mechanisms of surrounding rocks, particularly in water-rich stratum. In this regard, the aim of this Research Topic is to collect Original Research and Review articles that underline latest advances in the development and utilization of underground space, especially in the realm of UETE, through integrated theoretical, experimental, and numerical approaches.

Underground Urbanism
Author: Elizabeth Reynolds
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1315523310
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 309
Book Description
Have you ever wondered what lies beneath the streets of your city? Do you picture, in isolation, a series of train tunnels and pipes? Or perhaps the foundations of tall buildings that lie scattered, like icebergs, beneath the surface? As our cities grow up, out, and down, it is time we better understood how the different layers of these complex urban environments relate to one another. Underground Urbanism seeks to provide a new perspective on our cities, and consider how this might be used to engage more positively with them. So, tip your cities upside down to have a closer look, and let us rethink them from (below) the ground, up.

Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 178
Book Description
This Research Topic is Volume II of a series. The previous volume can be found here: Advances and Applications of Artificial Intelligence and Numerical Simulation in Risk Emergency Management and Treatment Our world is composed of multidimensional and multifaceted risks. In general, geological, environmental, and ecological risks would exist in both natural and engineering situations, such as karst desertification, water inrush, rock burst, debris flow, and landslide. These risks have great safety threats to human survival. In this regard, risk emergency management and treatment (REMT) has become a pivotal topic addressing the national governance system and its governance capacity. It underlines how to prevent and resolve grand security risks, to timely respond to all kinds of disasters and accidents, as well as to safeguard people’s lives and property and social stability.

Underground Spaces
Author: C. A. Brebbia
Publisher: WIT Press
ISBN: 1845641256
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 225
Book Description
It is a strongly held belief that population growth and the demand for better accommodation and leisure facilities, combined with a desire to improve the landscape, will result in the need to develop more underground spaces. This phenomenon, which started in countries subjected to extreme climates, is now becoming more widespread. Underground spaces are being utilized for a wide diversity of needs. They range from classical excavations to subway constructions; underground sports halls; power stations; waste repositories; underground cities, and many others. Their construction techniques are also varied, from open-air excavations to newly developed injection methods. The response of the underground structures on the imposed loadings depends on a number of parameters that sometimes are too complex or not fully understood, resulting in budget overruns or even failures that lead to loss of property or life. Such uncertain cases need to be addressed and engineers should be able to accurately predict the construction's performance throughout its construction and service life. The First International Conference on Underground Spaces discusses not only structural and environmental material characterization aspects but also the trends regarding the utilization of underground spaces. This book contains papers presented at the Meeting, and covers a wide range of topics including: Use of underground space for industry; Underground power stations; Toxic and nuclear waste repositories; Energy underground reservoirs; Underground sewerage plants; Waste storage and management; Road and railway tunnels; Utility tunnels; Fire defence; Defence against terrorist attacks.
