This book deals with the state-of-the-art and the underlying principles of key technologies which facilitate broadband telecommunications including millimetre wave gigabit Ethernet, terahertz communication, multiple input multiple output (MIMO) technology, orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM), ultra wideband (UWB) and the fourth generation (4G) network technologies. The book illustrates the use of these technologies, including high resolution three-dimensional millimetre wave radar imaging and terahertz imaging techniques. Within the next few years advances in graphic rendering and the application of millimetre wave radar technology will enable high resolution radar surveillance and operators of industrial processes to control their machines and to navigate remotely even in poor visibility environments. The principles and performance of terahertz imaging are also demonstrated in this important book. The performance and success of emerging all-IP networks depend largely on the efficiency of broadband technologies and this book provides the basis for 4G networks and explores key performance measures such as quality of service and handover between distributed networks (mobile and fixed). The symposium on "Worldwide Advances in Communications Networks" which was held on May 14-15, 1992 at GMU was an ambitious attempt to bring together leaders in the communications area to discuss the major issues in this rapidly-changing technology. The symposium was a success and many of the ideas presented at the conference are being implemented. This proceeding contains the majority of the papers presented at the symposium and abstracts of the remainder. The papers may be divided into seven general categories. The first five papers explore some important design issues for high speed networks (gigabit networks). Traffic modelling, quality of service guarantees, switching alternatives, and routing are discussed. The next two papers focus on applications for broadband communications. Weinstein begins by asking, "ARE THERE ANY APPLICATIONS?" and then proceeds to develop a wide variety of potential uses. Personick concentrates on multimedia applications. The next three papers deal with Personal Communications Services (PCS) and the notion of communicating with anyone, at any time, anywhere. Several of the key technical issues such as CDMA vs TDMA are analyzed in detail. The fourth area is satellite communications. Two papers discuss some of the major changes that are taking place and potential new systems. The next two papers discuss signal coding and digital video. Jayant provides an excellent overview of the impressive capabilities that are available for the compression of speech, audio, image, and video signals. Bellisio concentrates on video encoding.

New Services such as for Internet data and multimedia applications, have caused a fast growing demand for broadband communications. The fundamental technologies for the integration of these services have been developed in the last decade: optical communications, photonic switching, high speed local area networks, Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), ISDN and B-ISDN, Internet packet networks and mobile communications. The development was possible through the dynamic progress in communication and computer technologies and through worldwide standardization activities within ITU-T, the ATM Forum, the IETF, IEEE, ANSI, ETSI and other bodies. These developments have been supported by research and field trial programmes. Past developments, such as about LAN, Internet or ISDN networking technologies, have shown that it needs a time span of 10 years for a new technology from its research stage to its full application. Broadband Communications is just at its onset for full deployment. It will have a dramatic effect not only on the networking situation but on the whole development of information technology throughout our social and economic life, which is expressed by the conference theme ,The Future of Telecommunications". The Broadband Communications conference series of IFIP WG 6. 2 addresses the fundamental technical and theoretical problems related with these technologies. BC '98 is the fourth meeting in a series on conferences being held in Stuttgart, Germany. The previous confernces were held in Estoril, Portugal, in 1992, in Paris, France, in 1994, and in Montreal, Canada, in 1996.
