, Adrenal and Endocrine Tumors in Children' is the third volume in the series, 'Cancer Treatment and Research' devoted to pediatric oncology. Like its predecessors, it is organized into two sections. The first section again deals with issues of basic research germane to the understanding of childhood malignancies. In volume 3, the scope of the first section has been broadened to include a review that is epidemiologically oriented and a second review that is psychologically oriented. In the second part, major pediatric oncology units in Japan, Australia, Europe and the Americas have been invited to report their experience with of the multiple endocrine adrenal cortical carcinomas and the presentation neoplasia syndromes in children. In addition to these institutional reports of case material, there are reviews on genetics, pathology, and a diagnostic evaluation of children. The overview chapter on adrenal cortical carcinoma includes recommendations for radiotherapy from Dr. D' Angio and for che motherapy from Dr. Philip Schein. Individuals using these recommended therapies are encouraged to report their results to the editors. The informa tion will then be made available to others on request. Childhood Cancer in Britain
Author: Charles Stiller
Publisher: OUP Oxford
ISBN: 0191574740
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 288
Book Description
Cancer is diagnosed in about 140 per million children in Britain each year. There is a 1 in 500 chance that a child will be affected in the first 15 years of life, the most frequently occurring types of cancer being leukaemia and brain tumours. This book covers the descriptive epidemiology of childhood cancer in Britain, based on the unique work of the National Registry of Childhood Tumours, the largest population-based specialist childhood cancer registry in the world. The book provides a detailed account of national incidence and survival rates for childhood cancer in Britain during 1991-2000, and trends during 1966-2000. There is also an account of childhood mortality for the period 1965-2004. The diagnoses are classified throughout according to the International Classification of Childhood Cancer, the first time the third edition of this standard classification has been used for prevalence of incidence, survival and mortality data. The chapter on incidence rates is relevant to planning of health service provision and design of research studies on aetiology, whilst the chapter on trends in incidence is relevant to the possible effects of changes in environmental and other risk factors. In addition to comprehensive tables of rates, age-incidence graphs are provided for all the major types of childhood cancer, and possible artefacts are also discussed. The survival data demonstrates how clinical progress over the past 40 years has led to a major increase in the number of cancer survivors. The role of the Registry, covering history, methodology, current and future uses, is also discussed. This definitive work is the culmination of decades of epidemiological research and is essential reading for anyone involved in paediatric oncology or cancer epidemiology.

Endocrine Tumor Syndromes and Their Genetics
Author: C.A. Stratakis
Publisher: Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers
ISBN: 3318023310
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 202
Book Description
In these times, a book should aspire to present the most significant advances in the field, reflect the themes of the moment, and provide a useful compendium for future reference. This book accomplishes all three objectives by discussing the changing world of modern genetics in endocrine tumors and its impact on clinical practice. Clinicians have to incorporate modern genetics and systems biology in their daily practice. Educators and researchers have to introduce molecular pathways and their genetic variability in their teaching, as well as understanding of classic physiology and pathophysiology.Taking these aspects into account, the chapters in this book cover both the classic multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) syndromes, as well as newly described ones, such as Carney triad and Carney-Stratakis syndrome. Furthermore, the genetics of paragangliomas as well as thyroid, parathyroid, and pituitary tumors are examined. Outlining the latest research and its obvious implications for our understanding the genetics of endocrine tumor formation and molecular biology of cancer and their potential therapeutic implications, this book is not only useful for researchers but even more so for practicing clinicians, in particular internists, endocrinologists, oncologists, pediatricians, surgeons, pathologists, geneticists, and genetic counselors.
