"Disability insurance, long-term care insurance, and critical illness cover are becoming increasingly important in developed countries as the problems of demographic aging come to the fore. The private sector insurance industry is providing solutions to problems resulting from these pressures and other demands of better educated and more prosperous populations. Actuarial Models for Disability Insurance examines the actuarial structure of disability insurance, long-term care insurance, and critical illness cover, including problems encountered in the design and development of such insurances. Actuarial problems such as pricing and reserving are considered within the context of multiple state modeling, providing a vigorous and sound framework for analyzing personal insurances."--Provided by publisher.

Health Insurance
Author: Ermanno Pitacco
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319122355
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 172
Book Description
Health Insurance aims at filling a gap in actuarial literature, attempting to solve the frequent misunderstanding in regards to both the purpose and the contents of health insurance products (and ‘protection products’, more generally) on the one hand, and the relevant actuarial structures on the other. In order to cover the basic principles regarding health insurance techniques, the first few chapters in this book are mainly devoted to the need for health insurance and a description of insurance products in this area (sickness insurance, accident insurance, critical illness covers, income protection, long-term care insurance, health-related benefits as riders to life insurance policies). An introduction to general actuarial and risk-management issues follows. Basic actuarial models are presented for sickness insurance and income protection (i.e. disability annuities). Several numerical examples help the reader understand the main features of pricing and reserving in the health insurance area. A short introduction to actuarial models for long-term care insurance products is also provided. Advanced undergraduate and graduate students in actuarial sciences; graduate students in economics, business and finance; and professionals and technicians operating in insurance and pension areas will find this book of benefit.

Multi-State Actuarial Models of Functional Disability
Author: Joelle H. Fong
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
We apply generalized linear models to evaluate disability transitions for individuals in old age based on a large sample of U.S. elderly. We estimate a multi-state model for long-term care insurance applications, and find significant differences in disability rate patterns and levels from the commonly-used Robinson (1996) model. Our results suggest that the elderly face a 10% chance of becoming long-term care disabled only at ages past 90, rather than in their 80s. Furthermore, age patterns of recovery are found to differ significantly between the sexes. These estimates of transition probability are sensitive to the definition of 'long-term care disability', which has implications for the design of benefit triggers for private and public long-term care insurance programs.
