Book Description
This report focuses on the development of Sino-Canadian academic relations during the past 25 years. It examines in particular the involvement of, and impact on, Canadian and Chinese universities since the establishment of formal diplomatic relations in 1970. The report begins with a review of the study methodology involving data collection and interviews with Canadian and Chinese academics. Part 2 presents a historical overview of the four phases of Sino-Canadian academic relations and a review of relevant government programs such as those of the Canadian International Development Agency, International Development Research Centre, and the national research councils. Part 3 profiles the China-related activities of 30 Canadian universities. Part 4 describes the perspectives of nearly 900 Canadian and Chinese academics involved in Canada-China academic co-operation, including benefits for individual academics and for their universities. Part 5 assesses some of the problems that have emerged in Sino-Canadian academic relations and includes a number of recommendations regarding the future development of those relations. Appendices include statistical data.
