Excerpt from Was Abraham Lincoln a Christian? New England scholar, William E. Charming, wrote an essay called The Greatness of Napoleon. Dr. Charming mentioned three types of greatness lowest in his estimate he placed the greatness of action, and to this category he assigned the mili taristic Bonaparte; next he listed intellectual great ness, a rank which could be given to such a states man as Woodrow Wilson. Dr. Channing rated the remaining type far above the others. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Religious Opinions and Life of Abraham Lincoln As page after page was read, oh, so pitifully painful, again and again the thought persistently obtruded itself that Mr. Christian had been performing the fine - tooth-comb act. He seems to have gotten together all the awful things that have been said in derogation of Mr. Lincoln; at least if there are any worse ones I certainly never have heard of them. Book Description
Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln: The Ideal Christian It has been said of Abraham Lincoln, the humble backwoodsman who rose to be'the world's greatest governor and emancipator, that he was the m0st perfect Christian ideal outside of Bible characters. Too often ourgreat leaders limit themselves I') a certain nation or race, but this cannot be said of the two characters from whom we will try and draw some delightful and interesting comparisons. Jesus was a Jew, but more than a Jew; Lincoln was an American, but more than an American. They were what the Bible calls true Israelites and that includes all people who worship Abraham's God, regardless of nationality or color. Book Description
Excerpt from Religious Views of Abraham Lincoln The author feels that no apology is needed in giving out this booklet to the public. For seven years, he has sought to lay under tribute everything which might give light upon the subject herein discussed. He has received a letter from Hon. Robert Lincoln which confirms many statements contained in this work. Much could be said of the claims made by Spiritualists in insisting that Lincoln looked with favor upon their peculiar doctrine. Likewise, the Universalists have come in to announce that Mr. Lincoln threw out friendly glances at them. The author has sufficient material upon the religious glimpses of Lincoln to fill a five hundred page volume. Had the book been swelled to a full grown work, the price would have limited its sale and many would never read it because of its size. The author feels that confining the matter in these humble limits, will do more in enlightening people in regard to what Mr. Lincoln believed in spiritual things than in a more pretentious work. He has been compelled to waive the discussions and claims made by exponents of different doctrines, and devote the entire work to the question whether Abraham Lincoln was a Christian or an Atheist. No thought of money-making has prompted the attempt to give out this work. The price has been placed at such a figure to assure neither loss nor gain to the writer. Hoping that by placing our ear near the heart of our great martyr, we may be able to hear him sing his songs in the night. Book Description
Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln's Religion Had this lowly born Kentucky boy been ushered into the world centuries ago in England, doubtless he would have become the father of a royal family, the founder of a kingly dynasty, the pioneer of a courtly line Whose proudest boast would be to acclaim him their progenitor. Fortunately he belongs to modern time and sprang from the loins of a democratic race in a young and democratic country, around Whose virgin brow he twined the garlands of a never-fading luster. Book Description
Excerpt from Life of Abraham Lincoln: For the Home Circle and Sabbath School The emancipation of four millions of people from a state of bondage, the most cruel and degrading known in the annals of oppression, was an event which will fix attention so long as history shall be read. The prominence attained by the Chief Magistrate who led in the achievement of this grand result, and the affection cherished for him by the people whose liberties he so greatly aided in preserving, combine to render his personal example a moral power with the masses. To the colored race he stands in a higher relationship than that of any man who ever lived. Crushed for half a thousand years in a bondage which seemed as hopeless as it was cruel, the light of liberty burst upon them with a suddenness that brought shouts of wildest joy from every lip; and Abraham Lincoln became to them the Angel of Deliverance, sent direct on his mission by the blessed Jesus. Their enthusiastic gratitude kindled almost to idolatry. "He walks de earf like de Lord," exclaimed an aged freedman in describing the Emancipator. With these people the example of honesty, industry, and humanity found in Abraham Lincoln will have an influence proportionate to the love and veneration in which his memory is held.
