Book Description
This book results from my teenage fixation on monsters and mutations. If beauty is the trademark of oppression and order, deformity is the aesthetical precognition of revolution (monstrum means 'wonder', no less than 'horrible shape'). Monstrosity is a logic of disgregation, a way of naming the new; that's why revolution can find appropriate expression only in its open shape: Zappa's mutations, Romero's zombies, Nagai's robots. Contrary to Pomo populism, though, the author knows the difference between Art and Revolution, and investigates the possibilities of revolutionary art under capitalism, in an on-going confrontation with the perverse and polymorphous joys of his teenage heroes. Zappa, Romero and Nagai not only provide us with the central insight that phantasy is a way of seeing the world AS IT IS; they reveal the impotence of every Critical Theorist unable to take part in the event criticised.

Book Description
In his highly praised book The Nostalgia Factory, renowned memory scholar Douwe Draaisma explored the puzzling logic of memory in later life with humor and deep insight. In this compelling new book he turns to the “miracle” of forgetting. Far from being a defect that may indicate Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, Draaisma claims, forgetting is one of memory’s crucial capacities. In fact, forgetting is essential. Weaving together an engaging array of literary, historical, and scientific sources, the author considers forgetting from every angle. He pierces false clichés and asks important questions: Is a forgotten memory lost forever? What makes a colleague remember an idea but forget that it was yours? Draaisma explores “first memories” of young children, how experiences are translated into memory, the controversies over repression and “recovered” memories, and weird examples of memory dysfunction. He movingly examines the impact on personal memories when a hidden truth comes to light. In a persuasive conclusion the author advocates the undervalued practice of “the art of forgetting”—a set of techniques that assist in erasing memories, thereby preserving valuable relationships and encouraging personal contentment.

Book Description
Bringing together seventeen original essays by scholars from around the world, Screwball Television offers a variety of international perspectives on Gilmore Girls. Adored by fans and celebrated by critics for its sophisticated wordplay and compelling portrayal of a mother-daughter relationship, this contemporary American TV program finally gets its due as a cultural production unlike any other, one that is beholden to Hollywood’s screwball comedies of the 1930s, steeped in intertextual references, and framed as a "kinder, gentler kind of cult television series" in this tightly focused yet wide-ranging collection. This volume makes a significant contribution to television studies, genre studies, and women’s studies. Screwball Television seeks to bring Gilmore Girls more fully into academic discourse not only as a topic worthy of critical scrutiny but also as an infinitely rewarding text capable of stimulating the imagination of students beyond the classroom.

Book Description
What do expert drummers do? Why do they do it? Is there anything creative about it? If so, how might that creativity inform their practice and that of others in related artistic spheres? Applying ideas from cultural psychology to findings from research into the creative behaviors of a specific subset of popular music instrumentalists, Bill Bruford demonstrates the ways in which expert drummers experience creativity in performance and offers fresh insights into in-the-moment interactional processes in music. An expert practitioner himself, Dr. Bruford draws on a cohort of internationally renowned, peak-career professionals and his own experience to guide the reader through the many dimensions of creativity in drummer performance.

Book Description
If the ghosts of Woody Allen and David Mamet were available (at this early date) to float through the fiction of one writer, that writer would have to be Stan Rogal. In linked short stories imbued with wry humor, brutally frank honesty and caustically banal dialogue, women and men argue, make love and taunt each other mercilessly. Parents and kids don't get along: ''We love you ...'' says a character in ''Hard Line'' to which his father responds: ''Bullshit. I'm going to kill myself tonight.'' And the son's response? A deadpan, ''You've said that before.'' People on the cusp of middle age, who should know better, play dangerous drinking games, as in ''Friends.'' And more than anything, the middle-aged narrator OCo just over a bad marriage and taking university-level drama classes to ''get over it'' OCo always seems to be surrounded by women willing to comfort him when he needs it: ''If you need me, '' says one of these women in the story ''Family, '' ''Come over. Anytime. I'll do anything you want. Anything.''"
